One of neoliberalism's most cunning successes has been its ability to convince an entire generation that the route to a happier life comes via the individualistic hunt for new personal identity, rather than a collectivist fight for structural economic reform.

Iβm a psychologist who doesnβt believe that people are mentally ill or broken.
I believe people can heal themselves. I believe people are capable and resilient.

Let's not allow #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek to be yet another marketing opportunity for the neoliberal vision of personhood - with its accompanying medicalisation, pathologisation, commodification, depoliticisation and privatisation of emotional pain, divergence and disability.

The obtuse phrase βletβs de-stigmatise psychiatric disorderβ actually means: βletβs normalise the psychiatric framing of emotional pain'- let's pathologise, dehumanise & depoliticise how we understand & manage psycho-social distress. The phrase is a device of ideological capture.
