BREAKING NEWS: Secret acquirer of $15+ million domain chat .com revealed and it's exactly who you'd think.
For those of you that have been following me for a while, you may recall that I announced earlier this year that I had acquired the domain chat .com for an "8 figure sum" (which was later reported as being $15.5M).
I also shared that I had sold the domain to an undisclosed buyer.
I was not at liberty to share who the acquirer was (I was going to leave that to them, when they were ready).
Well, in a 8 character tweet (talk about brevity), Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI revealed that they were the buyer. If you visit the website now, it goes to ChatGPT.
I know many are curious about the sale price price. So, here's a prompt that GPT o1 does a really good job of reasoning through.
--- PROMPT BEGINS HERE ---
ROLE: You are a smart, curious person on the Internet.
CONTEXT: You have been given the following facts:
* Dharmesh buys chat .com for $15.5M
* He bought it for a project. He doesn't usually sell domains.
* When he does sell a domain, it's almost never at a loss.
* OpenAI was the perfect home for this domain, do he decided to sell it.
* He's known Sam for over a decade since before OpenAI
* Dharmesh doesn't like profiting off of people he considers friends (and also doesn't like referring to himself in the third person)
* He has repeatedly declared his love for OpenAI: The platform, the developer experience and the company.
* He's always wanted to own OpenAI shares.
* He made a non-humble brag earlier this year that he's now an investor in OpenAI.
* He doesn't need the cash from a domain sale, he's doing OK.
How much do you think he sold the chat .com domain for?
What percent of that was in shares of OpenAI?
Provide an approximate range and show reasoning.

We are absolutely at a place where, if AI development completely stopped, we would still have 5-10 years of rapid change absorbing the capabilities of current models and integrating them into organizations and social systems.
I don't think development is going to stop, though.

Sam Altman on what you need to do to survive in the age of artificial intelligence.
"You are about to enter the greatest golden age of human possibility..."
To thrive in that world, the skills that matter most are:
- Deep familiarity with the tools
- Staying abreast of changes
- Developing a great intuition for AI tools, where things are going, and how to make use of it
- Resilience and the ability to learn things fast and evolve yourself with technology
I know most of this stuff is a pretty big no-brainer for anyone paying attention, but here's the takeaway:
AI upskilling and keeping up with AI are possibly the most important skills in the world right now.
And the most fascinating part is that new AI developments and tools come out so fast that everyone is constantly learning.
I'd be willing to bet that if you're a complete beginner but spend 3 months of dedicated learning, you'd be fully caught up to power users.
In other words:
Spend 3 months learning → work 2-4x faster and future-proof yourself.
There's so much opportunity for anyone who just starts now.

If you think OpenAI Sora is a creative toy like DALLE, ... think again. Sora is a data-driven physics engine. It is a simulation of many worlds, real or fantastical. The simulator learns intricate rendering, "intuitive" physics, long-horizon reasoning, and semantic grounding, all by some denoising and gradient maths.
I won't be surprised if Sora is trained on lots of synthetic data using Unreal Engine 5. It has to be!
Let's breakdown the following video. Prompt: "Photorealistic closeup video of two pirate ships battling each other as they sail inside a cup of coffee."
- The simulator instantiates two exquisite 3D assets: pirate ships with different decorations. Sora has to solve text-to-3D implicitly in its latent space.
- The 3D objects are consistently animated as they sail and avoid each other's paths.
- Fluid dynamics of the coffee, even the foams that form around the ships. Fluid simulation is an entire sub-field of computer graphics, which traditionally requires very complex algorithms and equations.
- Photorealism, almost like rendering with raytracing.
- The simulator takes into account the small size of the cup compared to oceans, and applies tilt-shift photography to give a "minuscule" vibe.
- The semantics of the scene does not exist in the real world, but the engine still implements the correct physical rules that we expect.
Next up: add more modalities and conditioning, then we have a full data-driven UE that will replace all the hand-engineered graphics pipelines.
