Awful to see homes and communities hit by fires across the country tonight as the heatwave continues.
My thoughts are with everyone affected, particularly those who have been injured or forced from their homes, and with the firefighters who have been taken to hospital.
I’m in touch with local leaders like @RichParkerLab in the West Midlands and will be speaking to emergency services on the ground as they continue their response.
Our firefighters are working in incredibly difficult conditions and putting themselves at risk to keep others safe. A huge thank you to them and everyone supporting the effort tonight.

Apparently, some young people are starting wildfires and then posting their antics on TikTok. This is a fantastic strategy to ensure you are caught and charged with arson. Some parents have bred some really thick little twats.

⚠️ Heads up, everyone – in case you missed this recent development:
Police and farmers across parts of the UK (especially England and Scotland) have been warning about a suspected TikTok trend linked to deliberate fire-setting. It’s been associated with a series of arson attacks on hay and straw stacks, as well as some field and grass fires during this hot, dry spell.
Reports describe a possible challenge encouraging people to “set fire to as much stuff as possible,” including agricultural materials. One farmer near Musselburgh, Scotland, believes a blaze that destroyed a large portion of a 60-acre barley field may have been connected to it. Similar concerns have been raised about overnight haystack fires in northern England.
There’s also speculation (still under investigation, with no confirmed evidence yet) that some of the recent West Midlands grass and garden fires could be tied to A-level results day celebrations involving burning revision notes – another TikTok-style craze.
These incidents are particularly dangerous right now because dry conditions allow small fires to spread quickly into larger ones, risking homes, livestock, farmland, and lives.
Please: • Don’t take part in or share any fire-related challenges • Stay vigilant in rural or agricultural areas • Report suspicious activity to the police
