Today's Strategy Playbook. Oct 28, 2026
⚡Theme Today > The Piston Fires Ahead of a Massive FOMC & Mega-Cap Earnings Block. Equity markets arrive at Wednesday's critical macro gauntlet following a genuine rotational session where tech ($XLK +1.70%) and momentum factors caught strong bids while energy ($XLE −2.05%) and staples ($XLP −0.92%) were aggressively sold. $QQQ closed at 721.25 and $SPY at 769.66, effectively repairing the recent tech wreck, driven by funded AI hardware catalyst deals from Meta, AMD, and Broadcom. Participation will likely dry up this morning ahead of the 2:00 PM ET FOMC rate decision and Jerome Powell's 2:30 PM ET press conference, where the tone on December rate hikes will dictate action against a 10-year Treasury yield pinned at 4.99%. After the bell, Microsoft and Alphabet report, with extreme focus on Alphabet's $180–190B capex plan. Expect slow tape volume early, trade half-size quick hits, and rely on non-tech setups like biotech ($IBB) to avoid the tech/yield crossfire.
Long $IBB – The Biotech Non-Tech Breakout. The iShares Biotechnology ETF closed at $212.20 (+1.68%), pressing a multi-month descending trendline off its August highs with strong leadership from $AMGN and $REGN. As the highest-conviction setup on the board, biotech offers a clean weekly breakout with zero direct exposure to Wednesday's mega-cap tech earnings or Fed rate path anxiety. Trigger long exposure on a weekly close above the $213.00 convergence line, set a strict stop at horizontal support of $205.81, and target a broad structural run.
Short $WDC (or Long Reclaim) – The 200 EMA Pivot. Western Digital surged +6.95% to close at $380.88, but faded sharply into the close after testing its 200-day EMA near $385.00. With peer $STX selling off after hours despite a strong beat-and-raise, $WDC is a prime gap-down fade candidate if it rejects at resistance. Trigger short exposure on a rejection at $385.00, set a tight stop above Tuesday's high at $388.08, and target initial support at $368.00. If $WDC cleanly reclaims and holds $385.00, flip long with the same $368.00 invalidation floor.
Short $COST – The Staples Trendline Continuation. Costco executed its multi-year trendline rejection flawlessly on Tuesday, breaking the $1,000 level to close at $992.13 (−1.30%). As consumer defensives ($XLP) bleed capital while momentum regains control, this relative weakness provides a high-conviction downside continuation setup. Hold existing shorts or initiate new exposure on bounces remaining under $1,002.82, keep a strict stop above $1,020.00, and target the horizontal shelf and 50 EMA confluence at $965.15.

Why did $META fall 7% the day after the best quarter in its history?
Meta posted record sales and a booming ad business. Investors still wiped $124 billion off its value in a single day. The reason is hiding below the sales figure, and it could drive the stock for months. 🧵

50 shares × a $2 favorable move = a potential $100 gross gain.
But the same-sized adverse move could mean a $100 loss. That's why position sizing matters.
