Felt nice being away from the desk for a day in NYC. Loved it ;-)

Today's tape for the largest tech companies and AI infra firms. Note not just the valuations, but the relative volume and the RSIs. To call this action extreme would be an understatement.

I think one lesson from the last 12 months is that it's become very dangerous to place a highly concentrated bet (long or short) on any sector/theme, no matter how rational that bet seems based on fundamentals. Especially if a lot of other investors are placing similar bets.

Was told that more pod shops other than Walleye and Engineers Gate as well as single managers are impacted by this week's carnage. I have received dozens of DMs what has gone wrong. Couple of points, all my opinion only:

One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Leftists are fundamentally deluded about the world. Wealth is not a fixed pie; it grows. In market economies, poor people are not poor simply because some billionaires exist. People usually become billionaires by creating enormous amounts of value for millions of people. Likewise, poor countries are not poor because other countries are wealthy; in fact, trillions of dollars in foreign aid have been provided to poor countries over the decades. And indeed, many poor countries have actually become wealthier during the same period in which the number of billionaires worldwide has increased. Income inequality has declined, too. And btw, Africa's share of global FDI is relatively small, especially given its size (contrary to what the image implies).
"More billionaires are associated with less poverty."

A common best practice in investing is to never be short the last cut to earnings. Everybody covers once the catalyst is over. Be short into earnings previews, continued bad third party data but cover before the actual print. Most investors de grossed after a sloppy large cap tech earnings season and mid terms. Now potential progress on Iran and seasonality (cmon Santa Clause rally!) are upside catalysts from here xitter.gq/LepoulpePoulpo/status/…
Clearing event. All accross the boards, the shorts are being covered not only in semis but everywhere. Shd be confirmed during regular session. If we get good progress on Iran we will spike incredibly hard here, but even without as long as oil is tamed it shd be a great end of the year.

We're going to have a completely obscene upward Market rip into year end where pods lose twice as their shorts go up 50% and their longs go up 20% aren't we? Asking for my PA as a long only retail investor who works in a warehouse setting

Feel like a lot of mental problems and unhappy people in society would be solved just by doing more regular exercise. You meet a lot of people whom you have goals in common with, brings your mood up so much once you are done, you rest 50x better etc...

12km ish run with good elevation tomorrow my early morning. Trail half marathon in 13 days so this is the last week of good training. Hope to put 3 nice days after some knee problems recently. My goal is just to finish it without absolutely dying. Not in my best shape...

Bullish?
Today marks only the 2nd day this year that retail investors have been net sellers. MS QDS estimates, based on public data, that retail investors sold $1.4bn of US equities today — their first net sale since April. This is after retail has bought more than $1 trillion of ETFs and stocks YTD.

With pro-capitalist reforms, you always win.
India did pro-capitalist reforms and immediately became richer than sub-Saharan Africa, which they were poorer than until the early 2000s. It's insane how good capitalism is.

In light of the price movements and deal headlines today, I'm sharing this series which uses satellite imagery of Yanbu + PG loadings to get a holistic view of exports. We've been around 85% of pre-war levels since September with a small dip in Oct that's since recovered to over 90% of pre-war. A straightforward reading of the situation is that for all its efforts Iran hasn't been able to meaningfully constrain flows. It's possible they are holding back for fear of escalation, we don't know; but the flows are what they are. From this standpoint, it makes sense that Iran would want a deal right now. But think about it from Trump's perspective. Why would he give them much of anything with the current status quo? It's too late for any compression of the risk premium to meaningfully affect midterms, and flows are already close to normal. Given this backdrop I think it likely this is a ruse to lull the Iranians into a false sense of security before another round of attacks. It's been standard Trump MO to talk up diplomacy and rule out military strikes just before a big escalation and post-midterms he likely thinks he has nothing to lose from "finishing the job". That doesn't mean we don't get a deal announcement in the next 24 hours and some more downside, but if that happens it should be faded imo.

Enormous exports from China into Europe now -- chemical trade by weight
FT: "China has nearly doubled its chemicals capacity in some areas in just five years and now accounts for about half of global output of certain products, putting pressure on foreign rivals and threatening to open up a new front in its trade war." ft.com/content/2962ad57-cee1… via @ft

We hired one of these Bama Baly kids into our internship program this summer. Was a top candidate and killed the interview. Was extremely humble and didn’t come into the conversation with a “I want to learn” mindset, he came in with a “I want to help” mindset. Coming from a non-target school myself and working at a L/S shop straight out of undergrad, we are hungrier to think outside of the box and usually learn fast through relationship building rather than modeling behind a screen, give us a shot every once in a while, you probably won’t regret it!
Balyasny founder Dmitry Balyasny on why University of Alabama kids can do just as well as Ivy League kids at his fund: "Kids from, you know, Harvard and Princeton, and they've done great, and we've taken kids from, you know, University of Alabama, and they've done great" "Everybody's hardworking and has a level of intellect in this business" "We also love like looking at places where the school is like, okay, not top 20, it's like top hundred" "Like we love those kinds of kids."
