Happy JOHN MORRISSEY STAKES Day! Did you know that Morrissey owned and trained a horse who was a "mudder?" His 5yo horse DEFENDER won the Summer Handicap at SAR in 1872, romping by 10 lengths over a muddy track. My new brick in the @nmrhof courtyard celebrates this victory. 🐎πŸŽͺ – at Saratoga Springs, NY

.@jose93_ortiz just walked out of First Aid. He’s limping but he said β€œI’m okay.” He said he is not going to hospital. The horse he was riding stepped on his calf.

Chad Brown reports 2 BC scratches: Gaudreau from Juvenile (fever). Zulu Kingdom from Mile. Brown said that was done in consultation with the vets, neither Brown nor vets happy with way Zulu was jogging. Zulu expected to race again in 2027 and "this won't impact that," Brown said.

This remarkable photograph was taken on 16 July 1929, after a frightened horse bolted with its wagon and ended up in an Amsterdam canal. The horse freed itself from the wagon and swam to safety, but getting it back onto the street was another matter. Enter Sinck’s horse-hoisting machine, a mobile crane designed specifically for hauling horses out of the city's canals. Such accidents were surprisingly common; at one point the apparatus was reportedly called out around 50 times a year. Thankfully, this horse survived, cheered on by quite a crowd! #Amsterdam #1920s #SocialHistory
