A central job for policy economists is to tell politicians when they are engaged in magical thinking. Things don't go great for CEOs who dethrone their accountants.
Economic populism also means dethroning economics. It’s not the job of economists to dictate how our economies should be run but to find solutions to implement democratically determined goals.

Should write it up sometime (@tylercowen, we'll do the book on this!) But 90% 1) read, fiction and non, on the place, 2) read Byron, Thesiger, Dalrymple, Raban, Gimlette, Heat-Moon; do what they do, 3) walk everywhere, incl. "outer" neighborhoods, 4) speak some of the language.

The 2026 Institut Ostrom Award for Intellectual Leadership goes to @tylercowen, Professor of Economics at @GeorgeMasonU, Chairman at @mercatus, and co-founder of @MargRev, @MRevUniversity, @cowenconvos and Emergent Ventures. For a lifetime spent opening up economic debate to millions; for building institutions (a daily blog, a podcast, a university, and a fellowship program) that have changed how a generation thinks about talent and progress; and for embodying the curious, independent and constructive spirit behind the Institute's name. Thank you for coming to Barcelona, Tyler.

Evidence is growing that we’re turning the corner on productivity. US productivity grew at a 3.6% annual rate this past quarter. That’s more than double the 1.5% average from 2007-2019. The new numbers put me further ahead for my bet with Bob Gordon about productivity growth in the 2020s. 💪 Here’s how far the US is now ahead of the CBO estimate at the start of the decade (before they knew about the pandemic or LLMs) courtesy of @jasonfurman’s Econvitals.

Super interesting "The Illusion of Time." College-graduating women in Pakistan underestimate how soon marriage activities arise (i.e. family pressure). If they don't get in gear and get a job right away, the window is gone and they might never enter workforce.

OK, folks, the AI replication wars have officially begun! I think this is good in equilibrium. But for now, anyone with a public profile should preemptively replicate their own research and come clean about any errors on their own terms. Others should welcome such admissions.

It seems to me that democracy has on the whole worked very well in America over the last decade, and perhaps better than in any other major country in the West. National outcomes have repeatedly been responsive to underlying voter preferences on meaningful questions, and significant changes in policy have ensued. I’ve been reading Democracy in America this past week, and it’s striking how much it still rhymes nearly two centuries later.

AJ Dybantsa is one of the most gifted drivers & transition scorers in NBA history. The explosiveness, the change in pace, the balance & the footwork is all ridiculous at 6'9". He's already leading the NBA in transition PPG & shooting 59% on all 2Pers with a strong FTR. Freak.

I have a new book on the dangers of populism, so instead of talking primarily about the book, which you can get elsewhere, @tylercowen suggested that we discuss Conrad's Nostromo, a 1904 novel that addressed many of the themes I cover. It was an inspired recommendation. The result was a wide-ranging conversation on nationalism, state capacity, demagoguery, Western interests in the developing world, and more. Maybe the best podcast I've done. Watch or listen here. conversationswithtyler.com/e…

Stock markets up after election results. But what is most interesting is the composition. Health and solar up, data centers and Musk-related down. Crypto up may be the one I wouldn't have expected. And note, markets presumably had already been pricing in large Democratic gains.
