What this report makes clear is the bankruptcy of US sanctions policy. It has achieved so much at hurting average people with inflation and shortages but it has achieved nothing in changing government behavior or even denting its ability to fight a war. That is what should be alarming about this report. reuters.com/world/iran/irans…

At first, I thought quoting Mark Dubowitz about what Democrats should do politically on Iran was some kind of joke. But then I realized maybe he is some kind of Dem sleeper agent in disguise. After all, nothing has done more to sink Trump and Republicans in the polls than launching the Iran war FDD demanded for years.
NEW COLUMN: All Democrats want to do if they gain power in the midterms is pull the US out of the Iran war. Are they risking being on the wrong side of history? politico.com/news/magazine/2…

Oh wow the Secretary of Iran's top decision-shaping council, gathering the country's civilian and military leadership, is relevant. With intelligence this perceptive, Iran possibly already has the bomb.

NEW: A Sept 2025 IG report I obtained via FOIA request sheds light on Biden admin arms transfers to Israel:
-a 12.5 year backlog for reviewing alleged human rights violations by IDF units receiving aid
-outdated training/guidance
-no verification that barred units didn't get aid

Pretty hilarious how all these pro-Israel folks are explaining that the reason the Arab parties are incompatible with Zionist parties is because the Arab parties want equal rights. That is 1) true and 2) a gotcha, but really not how you think it is.

2. Changing Israel's constitutional and national character
Under Section 3 of the Platform, From Racism to Full Equality, the Joint List advocates:
A constitutional framework founded on equal citizenship regardless of national or religious affiliation.
Recognition of Palestinian Arabs in Israel as an indigenous national community with collective national rights [in Israel].
Separation of religion and state.
Repeal of legislation it considers to establish Jewish supremacy, particularly the Nation-State Basic Law.
Now this might sound noble, except for the fact that the Joint List defines Zionism itself as racist (see Point 1).
The 2018 Nation-State Basic Law establishes that national self-determination in Israel is exclusive to the Jewish people. Repealing that law and replacing its constitutional principles would materially change Israel's existing constitutional definition.
There is an important qualification: advocating equal citizenship or repealing the Nation-State Law does not, by itself, necessarily entail abolishing every aspect of Israel's Jewish character. However, Balad, a constituent party of the Joint List and an explicitly Arab/Palestinian nationalist party, explicitly advocates transforming Israel into a “state of all its citizens” rather than one constitutionally defined as Jewish. en.idi.org.il/israeli-electi…
“Spare me the catastrophizing” says it perfectly for this Haley Stevens dead ender. Michael Cohen is not worried about Trump rounding up his family into private immigration detention camps, isn’t going to be sent to fight in the war, doesn’t care about gas prices (he drives an EV, right Michael? Good for you!), his Medicaid isn’t about to be slashed, his rural hospital isn’t about to close. This election genuinely and materially does not make a difference to him. He’s bothered by Trump’s rudeness but he can live with it. What’s most important to him is that Abdul El-Sayed lose to Mike Rogers (whose own staff have been outed as neo-Nazis, but he’d rather not think about that part and just vote for him anyway. Though he doesn’t live in Michigan)

Spare me the catastrophizing. But if the race is as important as you say it is why isn’t AES making even minimal effort to mend fences? How many excuses are you gonna make for this guy?

If striking 11,000 targets and a months-long blockade failed to produce Iranian collapse or capitulation, what would a “short, intense” military campaign produce—other than Iranian and Houthi retaliation against shipping, pipelines, and airports, another oil price spike, more casualties, and further erosion of public and regional support for the war? If reports like this are just the umpteenth time since the April ceasefire that Trump has threatened escalation to get a “better deal,” more power to him. But if it’s an actual operational plan, it’s likely to prove as counterproductive as the previous rounds.

Just pure gaslighting from Cohen who doesn’t even pretend to care about the vicious Islamophobia against El-Sayed from the Republican side, which has no equivalent on the Democratic side. AES, like Mamdani, has again and again gone out of his way to talk about Jewish safety and to denounce antisemitism, but, as with Mamdani, it’s never enough. Meanwhile, the same people demanding he denounce bigotry say nothing about the bigotry he is enduring - including Cohen. They’re even willing to vote for those racist bigots like Rogers.
Just sick twisted dishonest stuff from bad faith actors and racists.
I'm just gonna say it again ... Jewish voters in Michigan have expressed concerns, fears, and anxieties for months about El-Sayed's dangerous anti-Semitic rhetoric and have consistently sought reassurance from him, and people like Mehdi Hasan and others on the left "have not said a word about it" because they don't care about anti-Semitism, they don't care about Jewish safety, and they don't care about the future of American Jewry.
All they care about is Islamophobia (I mean, he says it below!), and their continued refusal to even acknowledge Jewish fears is, as much as anything else, driving Jews to vote for Mike Rogers.
I mean, I wish this wasn't true because I live in America, and I raise my children here, and I want them to live in a country that believes their lives, their identity, and their safety matter. But if the last three years have shown me anything, it's that for much of the left, Jews don't count, and my safety and security do not matter to them.

Trump is reportedly planning to restart war with Iran after the election.
Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation.

Rob, the hypocrisy is touting that Arab citizens can vote as a sign of democracy and inclusivity while treating their chosen representatives—even those who sat in the government only a few years ago—as unacceptable even as outside supporters of an alternative coalition…when the alternative is a government that includes racists and extremists and a national security minister who was convicted of supporting a terrorist organization; parties that want to annex the West Bank, settle Gaza, and expel Palestinians; and non-Zionist Haredi parties whose constituents largely refuse to serve in the military even in wartime. Obviously opposition leaders have every right to judge such a coalition as the “lesser evil”—but if that’s their choice, it is hard to point to Arab citizens’ right to vote as evidence of their meaningful political inclusion. I did not say this was an easy decision but if it's the one they make it would be a telling one.
A little humility, please.
Choosing to govern with the support of #Israel's two #Arab parties may seem like a straightforward political calculus 6,000 miles away but let's not forget that the Joint List, by far the largest of the two, ran on a platform in which it described itself as "a genuine democratic alternative to the racist #Zionist consensus" -- meaning not just an alternative to @netanyahu but to the fundamental idea of the state.
The @gadi_eisenkot-led coalition may ultimately decide to rely on their votes to oust the current government but let's not insult people who have devoted their lives to protecting Israel to suggest this is an easy or simple decision. And if they decide against that path, they may have a very good reason.

It’s troubling that a @WSJ reporter feels comfortable taking a bigoted swipe at a top American Middle East analyst based on his ethnicity.

The Israeli election should bring home an uncomfortable reality for Americans: Netanyahu's Likud remains the largest party. Further, his policies toward Gaza's civilians were not really repudiated by the opposition. Aside from the Arab parties and Yair Golan, the opposition barely campaigned on Palestinian civilian deaths and suffering. This is a fundamental divergence between a majority of Americans and a majority of Israelis.

With the usual caveat that nothing Trump says means much, and that nothing he does follows a clear logic, signs increasingly are pointing to renewed US/Israeli strikes on Iran.
The US can ensure the war will be intense. It can't ensure it will be short. And Iran will have every incentive to make it as long and painful as possible.

These increasingly hysterical attacks are a prelude to Republicans bringing us to a very, very dark place after the election.
