This is an important story but it's complicated.
tl;dr: Trump is using broadband funding grants to stop enforcement of all state-level internet regulations for 14 years. California is the last state to decide whether to go along. It's Newsom's call. 🧵prospect.org/2026/10/19/trum…
yes, I agree this bill is about other things: transmission legislation negotiated from an absurd position of weakness resulting in a terrible deal that will enshrine increased US fossil fuel production and exports for two generations, locking in Environmental Justice harms

Whitehouse and Heinrich clearly care a lot about climate. But this bill is about other things. We climate people need to stop acting like our thing is all that matters and everything is about us.
lol who needs models when we can see right now in real time how US LNG exports increase global emissions. No country on earth exports more LNG than we do, and it's feeding greater use of natural gas. It is NOT widely displacing coal
the greatest impediment to electricification isn't inadequate transmission - it's expensive electricity, w/ xtreme weather (wildfires, hurricanes) adding mounting T&D costs. Federalize climate related utility costs through a federal windfall profits tax on fossil fuel companies
pay attention to sections 1401 and 1402. These are the huge wins for the American Petroleum Institute.
Replying to @ppavnr @TysonSlocum
Additionally I am unsure why you all are acting like there’s a grand conspiracy afoot re industry support for the bill
advocates for the Transmission piece already admit that additional, significant energy market reforms (not included in the bill) are required to unlock cheap energy. Building transmission alone does not guarantee energy affordability.
every model looking at the impact the legislation has on natural gas infrastructure & LNG exports understands it results in increased exports. There's nothing vague about this, which is why the American Petroleum Institute is putting on a full throated lobbying blitz in support
The permitting legislation will unlock electric transmission investment. It will also guarantee increased domestic oil and gas fracking to feed ever-incrasing fossil fuel exports. Which is terrible, catastrophic policy negotiated behind closed doors

the explicit justification for this legislative deal by Sen Dems Whitehouse & Heinrich is that this is a climate bill that will reduce emissions. The fact that now its proponents are admitting that the emissions benefits are hazy punch a pretty large credibility hole here
Blackstone losing every dollar on this deal - a negative EBITDA company with $413bn in non-cancellable contracts that has yet to go public taking on - on top of $4.4bn of debt at 8.5% - billions in debt at *10%* - what an insane deal!
