I took this photo (discreetly) of Coach June & Morrison the morning of the '23 XFL Division Final with Seattle. A rare glimpse of them reviewing scripts. Time was still, my gut told me to take it... It was their last game together. One of the greatest coaching duos of all-time...

Seeing a lottttt of chatter about empty college football stadiums lately. And that NIL is getting some of the flack.
But here's what I find interesting.
Michigan, Ohio St, Alabama, Texas, etc. are still averaging around 100k fans at games. Meanwhile, other programs are struggling to fill half their seats.
So is this really a college football problem? Or a brand problem?
I spent 14yrs building a brand and one thing I learned is that getting customers is hard. Keeping them is even harder.
College football is no different. Just because you've got a football team doesn't mean people owe you their Saturday.
Winning matters. A LOT. But so does the atmosphere, traditions, community, and the feeling of being part of something bigger.
College athletics has been a massive biz for decades but how many athletic departments actually think like consumer brands?
How are you attracting new fans? Turning students into lifelong supporters? Making game day something people don't wanna miss?
There's a BIG difference between selling tickets and building fans.
One gets someone through the gates on Saturday. The other keeps them coming back for 30yrs.
Blaming NIL for empty seats feels lazy to me.
The biggest programs have spent generations building something people want to be part of. Not every school has that luxury. But every school has an opportunity to build a stronger connection with its fans.
You gotta give people a reason to give a shit.

Last night Trump said he could have won Vietnam in a week. His plan was “going after Ho Chi Minh City.”
Ho Chi Minh City was Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. Our ally. The enemy’s capital was Hanoi. We bombed it.
He called the presidents who fought that war stupid, then explained how he’d have won it by attacking our own side.
58,220 Americans died in that war. Trump got five deferments. Now he’s telling the rest of us how easy it would have been.
He’s had more than fifty years to learn which side we were on. He still hasn’t. That alone should disqualify him from sending anybody else’s kids to war.
Instead, he’s weighing more strikes on Iran after Tuesday. His administration has reportedly considered using the “mother of all bombs,” the one he calls “like a tiny nuclear bomb.”
The man who thinks we should have bombed our ally’s capital gets to choose the targets.

Been talking with some friends and colleagues in college athletics lately and I really don’t think we’ve fully realized just how much NIL has changed the landscape. I think the NCAA has failed both coaches and athletes by allowing such a drastic change with so little structure or regulation around it.
I also think we’re seriously underestimating what putting hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of dollars in the hands of 17–21 year olds does psychologically. What does that do to your willingness to work? To compete? To handle adversity? I’m all for athletes being compensated, but pretending that kind of money doesn’t fundamentally change the dynamics of a team in ways that are tough to grasp seems naive.
If anything, I think this makes the responsibility of coaches to develop young men & women more important than ever. You have to build a culture that demands accountability, doesn’t tolerate nonsense, and teaches things that extend well beyond winning games.
