Meet Dr. Alana Carrasco, one of our surgery residents. Her passion for education has led her to help launch a program designed to help medical students select their surgical specialties and guide them through residency applications.

Yes, I think so. For eg, we found that for the 19 pt w peritoneal mets but had PCI<10, pts with above median IL6 had OS of 11.8 mo vs 29.6 mo for pts with below median IL6. Perhaps IL6 can help select patients for CRS+HIPEC? 12/

A corollary to that question, and one that is functionally more relevant: does more accurate risk stratification help guide clinical management? 11/

There are now a number of easily measured circulating factors that appear to provide prognostic information in the pre-treatment setting. These include IL6, NLR, Glasgow prognostic score (CRP+albumin). Should we start incorporating these tools in our clinical staging? 10/

In summary, we found that circulating IL6 provides prognostic and predictive info for patients w gastric or GEJ adenos (higher IL6=bad). 9/

We then asked if IL6 was assoc with therapy response. We analyzed 50 pt who had resectable disease and underwent neoadjuvant therapy. We found that pts whose IL6 dropped after neoadjv therapy more often had tumors that showed path near-complete or complete response (TRG 0-1). 8/

Importantly, MVA showed that IL6 level was independently prognostic as a continuous variable (even when NLR was considered). 7/
