ALT During the week of July 12, 2021, at the request of Education Minister Stephen Lecce, material referencing the subjective nature of mathematics, the role of mathematics in normalizing racism, and the use of mathematics to interrogate social issues was removed from the Ontario Grade 9 de-streamed mathematics curriculum. OMCA strives to support district math leaders in addressing inequities in mathematics education, including racial disparities in student achievement. As an organization, OMCA advocates for high quality, research-affirmed mathematics instruction for all learners, including culturally responsive pedagogy through an anti-racist lens. In this light, OMCA is deeply concerned that the recent edits to the curriculum undermine our collective efforts to make mathematics learning responsive to students’ lived experiences, support critical thinking, and eliminate oppressive practices that prohibit the effective implementation of a de-streamed math curriculum.
