The PlayStation 2 was released in North America 26 years ago... from yesterday. VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas has some PS2 maps, many of them are thanks to @VGCartography for graciously sharing them with us! See them here: vgmaps.com/Atlas/PS2/index.h…

Happy 37th birthday to the Game Boy & Tetris (in North America)! How I play two-player Game Boy Tetris on the big screen: two copies of Tetris, two Super Game Boy 2s, a Game Link cable, two Super NESes, two converters to HDMI, and an HDMI multiviewer. (Two separate photos, BTW.)

You know, if they had moved the L to where the R is, and put the R below that, so it's lined up with the B and A - as in, Y/X/L above B/A/R - then it would be a perfect controller for Street Fighter II and other six-button fighting games on the Super NES...

Since the arcade controls have three punches on top and three kicks on the bottom, and the default is Y/X/L for punches and B/A/R for kicks, it's always baffled me that the Capcom Power Fighting Stick has them arranged as HP/MP/HK on top and LP/LK/MK on the bottom! Why???

The LEGO Creator 3 In 1 "Retro Gaming Console" able to be a handheld, computer, or arcade cabinet, but NOT a console, is odd to me. (I don't consider handhelds to be "consoles". If you know the definition of "console", it really doesn't make sense to say "handheld console".)

I've always thought of a "console" as a structure for equipment (switches, readouts) or storage. Sort of like furniture or a fixed box with stuff to use that you don't normally move around in use (like you would a handheld tool). The Merriam-Webster dictionary agrees with me.

Language evolves, but it's hard for me not to see "handheld console" as an oxymoron. Consoles (when considering them to be stationary structures) can't be handheld by their very definition, so conversely, a handheld isn't a console. Am I really the only one that thinks this?

Halloween post #27: Speaking of creepy-but-funny movie-based video games, one that has a surprisingly detailed ending on the NES, recreating its ending scenes (in a time when many movie-based games cheaped out with textual endings), is Sunsoft's Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

You can read about the ending of Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and other 1990 NES games, in @VGMuseum1's book, "NES Endings Compendium - Vol. 2: 1990", which I reviewed here: youtube.com/watch?v=z3FwN1aU…

For VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas, zagato blackfist submitted Chubby Cherub, (Capcom's) Gold Medal Challenge '92, and Puss N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure today. Now there are only 101 official North American NES games left to map! 😀 xitter.cf/VGMaps/status/21119522…
Happy 41st birthday to the NES! The NES section's the largest on VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas, but there're 104 North American NES games that still haven't been mapped! If a NES game ISN'T here, we've got its maps! If it IS here, consider contributing maps of it!

Halloween post #26: Speaking of Super NES secrets, here's one accessible at the beginning of a game, rather than the end! In The Addams Family, there are hidden rooms, starting with an invisible door in the lower-left of the Hall Of Stairs, full of power-ups, money, and 1ups!

Halloween post #25: Speaking of Castlevania tricks, here's one for Super Castlevania IV (Super NES). Jump down before the stairs that lead to Dracula to find invisible platforms, and down here, power-ups will rain on you, so you'll be more ready for the final confrontation!

VGMaps.com just received maps of a classic DOS game, "The Amazing Spider-Man", thanks to TimbreWulf! vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC/index.ht… This game is memorable for having a health meter that shows Spidey turning skeletal from his toes up to his scalp as he takes damage!

(Not necessarily another one of my Halloween posts, but with the spider and skeleton, it could be!)

Halloween post #24: Speaking of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES), as cool as the game is (I think so, anyway), the bosses aren't that challenging. Death can be defeated with a single bulb of garlic, as seen here:

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! 8-bit's the most classic, but if you want more official stages, try Super Mario Advance 4 (GBA) with the e-Reader peripheral & cards. If you don't have all that, you can play them all on Wii U VC and NSO's "Nintendo Classics" GBA app!

Here's another attempt where I actually did pass this e-Reader stage, "No Time To Dawdle". The limited time makes this challenging!

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! Super Mario Bros. 3 was mapped as a multi-mapper project on VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas. It can be challenging to collaborate as a group, but I think we did okay! See the maps here: vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/index.h…

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! Japanese release, that is! I discovered Super Mario Bros. 3 at an import games shop at West Edmonton Mall. SMB2 was still hot then, so my mind was blown to see SMB3 already! I rented and played it a ton, long before seeing "The Wizard".

Today, everyone has the Internet, games come out at the same time worldwide, and if they don't, importing is so easy. It is better overall, but I kind of miss the feeling of being "in the know" by being familiar with Japanese games before they came out in North America.
