Legendary superintendent, Dr. Robert Fortenberry once said to me, “Son, never take advice from people you wouldn't trade places with.” Seek advice and guidance from people with a track record of success and from those who have been where you're trying to go.

It is almost impossible to understand what someone is telling you when you are not fully present. So put your phone away, get off of your laptop, and stop looking at your watch. Great guiding principles for team meetings. Listen to learn and to understand.

Recently a superintendent told me that improving the district’s culture was his top initiative for the coming school year. Culture is not an initiative. It is the enabler of all initiatives. It’s how things are done around here. It’s grounded in integrity, inclusion, and focus.

When Steve Jobs was 12 years old he called up Bill Hewett (co-founder of Hewlett-Packard) and said “Hi, I’m Steve Jobs. I’m a student in high school. I want to build a frequency counter, and I was wondering if you have any spare parts I could have.” Great leaders ask for help.
