Our screening of KCET’s Artbound ‘Chinatown Punk Wars’ at GP was a monumental affair. The film and surrounding event explored Los Angeles punk rock history in intimate detail. A diverse crowd of punk enthusiasts, ages ranging from 5 all the way to 65, filled the upper and lower levels of Cal Plaza. The neighboring buildings were the backdrop, illuminated by a spectrum of purple hues and sphere-like lights mimicking a star filled sky while the film was played on stage. Families spread out on the grass and the air was filled with echoes of laughter and cheer.
A female-led panel discussion followed the screening featuring members of the Gen Z punk girl band The Linda Lindas, punk trailblazer Alice Bag, and UCLA associate music professor Jessica Schwartz.
The audience got a welcome lesson in punk dance by Chicxs Rockerxs Sela and had a chance to practice their new moves like the pogo during the live performance by The Linda Lindas. Their hits ‘Resolution/Revolution’ and ‘Racist, Sexist Boy’ were performed as glowing animations of cats and text floated across the screen. The night even included a surprise guest performance by @AliceBag .
History was made as the torch had been passed from one generation of punk rockers to the next, the fire still burning strong.
