Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson were married on October 3, 1992, in Chicago, Illinois. Long before they became the first Black couple to occupy the White House, they were two young professionals building a life together, with ambitions, challenges and dreams that extended far beyond politics. The two first met in 1989 at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin, where Michelle was working as an attorney and Barack was a summer associate. Michelle was initially assigned to mentor him professionally. Their working relationship gradually developed into a romance, although she reportedly turned down his first invitation to a date. They eventually began seeing each other, and Barack proposed in 1991. Their wedding took place at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, followed by a reception at the South Shore Cultural Center. Family and friends gathered to celebrate a relationship that had grown from an unexpected introduction into a lasting partnership. Their marriage would go on to include two daughters, Malia and Sasha, years of public service, a presidential campaign and eight years in the White House. When Barack Obama became president in 2009, Michelle became the first African American First Lady of the United States. Both had established careers and identities of their own long before entering national politics, and their partnership became one of the most recognizable in modern American history.

BREAKING: HOLY SMOKES! Democrats now control enough states to effectively abolish the Electoral College through the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Republicans did NOT have this on their bingo cards... Under the Constitution, states control their electoral votes and are allowed to decide how they are allocated during presidential elections. Currently, almost every state gives its votes to whoever wins the state. In practice, the current system means that a candidate can win the national popular vote, but lose the election because small states like Wyoming exert undue influence on the outcome. That state has 3 electoral votes with a population of just 577,000 people. California has 54 electoral votes and a population of 39.5 million people. So a vote in Wyoming is essentially 3.8 times as valuable as one in California. Since 1992, Democrats have won the popular vote seven out of nine times. Under the NPV, states that join agree to give their electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote, not just their own state. So a state could go red on the map, but if the Democrat wins the national vote, they still get that state's votes. And vice versa of course. The crucial mechanism is that the compact doesn't trigger until the member states have a combined power of at least 270 electoral votes, the number needed to win the White House. So far, 18 states plus D.C. have joined, totaling 222 electoral votes. We only need 48 more. Now is the chance to pass this measure in every state possible. Democrats won both houses of the legislature in Wisconsin for the first time in 18 years (10 electoral votes). We won the Pennsylvania state Senate for the first time since 1993 (19 votes). We now have a trifecta in Michigan (15 votes). And we won the governorโ€™s race in Nevada (6 votes). 10 + 19 + 15 + 6 = 50. 222 + 50 = 272. And if we hold our lead in the Arizona Senate, that number could climb as high as 283, more than enough to trigger the compact. In addition to removing an imbalance in our system that favors Republicans, this novel approach would fundamentally change how candidates run their presidential campaigns. Currently, they are incentivized to ignore most of the country. If you live in a โ€œsafeโ€ state, red or blue, your vote for President is basically decided before you cast it. Campaigns spend their time and money in a handful of swing states while the rest of us watch from the sidelines. If the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is adopted, they'll have reason to hit every state because they're aiming to win the largest swath of the country as a whole, not just certain states. States have until July 20, 2028 to join the compact in time for the next presidential election. We can fix our democracy. The time is now. Please โค๏ธ and share if you support this idea!

I think itโ€™s fucking funny that Trump thinks he can stop future presidents from redecorating his Oval Office brothel when heโ€™s the very same guy who tore down an entire wing of the White House without even asking for permission. He can go fuck himself.

I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for my campaign as we fight to make sure every lawful ballot is counted. We saw historic voter turnout in this election across Mississippi and showed the country that Mississippi Matters โ€” in large part due to the support of my day one team who has been with me all along. My campaign, alongside the DSCC and Elias Law Group, Lisa Ross, and our great team of local attorneys, are leading the effort to ensure every eligible voter is heard and I am confident that when votes are counted, we will flip this seat. Stay tuned for more updates from our team!

There is much to celebrate this week, but I want to call specific attention to historic gains Democratic women made in representation: - For the first time in history, over 100 Democratic women will serve in the U.S. House. - At least 16 Democratic women will serve in the Senate. - At least 14 Democratic women will serve as governors, a record high. - A record of 2,600 Democratic women running for seats in state legislatures helped flip 12 majorities and break 11 supermajorities. - Four states elected their first woman governor: Georgia, Minnesota, Ohio, and Tennessee. - @KeishaBottoms will be the first Black woman to serve as a governor. - @DebHaalandNM will be the first Native American woman to serve as a governor. - @GinaHinojosaTX will be the first Latina to serve as governor of Texas. - @peggyflanagan will be the first Native American woman to serve in the Senate. I am beyond excited to see these extraordinary people and public servants tackle accountability, affordability, and our other challenges to make life better for everyone in this country. Congratulations to everyone who ran: win or lose, fighting for what's right is always worth it.

Daily reminder that some of the deepest Medicaid cuts in Trump and Republicansโ€™ Big Ugly Bill start hitting families at the beginning of 2027. They timed the worst of it to land after the midterms. When Democrats take the gavels in January, one of our very first votes will be to reverse those cuts and restore the ACA tax credits that kept premiums down.
