Counterfeiting is no longer just about fake products arriving from somewhere else.
In some cases, the products are being made and distributed much closer to the people buying them.
On September 9, 2026, Nigeria’s NAFDAC warned that counterfeit networks were setting up production and distribution operations within the country.
The products of concern included adulterated toothpaste, contaminated bottled water, fake cosmetics and unsafe dairy products.
And this problem extends beyond Nigeria.
➥ KENYA: A 2025 Anti-Counterfeit Authority survey found that firms reported an average counterfeiting prevalence of 18% across the sectors studied.
Automotive spare parts reached 21%, while alcoholic beverages reached 19%.
These are surveyed, finding that one in five products everywhere is fake.
➥ SOUTH AFRICA: In September 2026, authorities seized more than 10,000 suspected counterfeit items worth over R9 million in Marabastad.
The goods included sportswear, footwear, cosmetics and phone accessories.
➥ VIETNAM: Authorities reported seizing nearly 20 tonnes of confectionery and drinks carrying misleading foreign-origin packaging and barcodes.
These are different countries, different products with one shared problem.
