Today we remember the birthday of Paul “Bear” Bryant, born on this date Sept. 11, 1913. Bryant became one of the greatest coaches in college football history and the defining figure of @AlabamaFTBL for a generation. During his 25 seasons leading the Crimson Tide from 1958–82, Alabama claimed six national championships and 13 SEC championships. When Bryant retired following the 1982 season, his 323 career victories were the most ever by a college football head coach. The unmistakable voice, the rolled-up game plan, the pregame lean against the goalpost and that famous houndstooth hat became enduring symbols of Alabama football. More than four decades after his death, Bryant’s name and legacy remain woven into the University, the program and the standard expected at Alabama.
