South Asian is a term used to appropriate Hindu art, traditions and culture while using the term Hindu for aspects negatively stereotyped in the west for instance Bindi, mehndi, Food, is South Asian. Caste, Sati, etc is Hindu or Indian.
South Asian is the creole term that people who immigrate from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh to the U.S. use to delineate the shared experiences and cultural commonalities of many of them living in a Western society. This is especially so for second and third generation immigrants who generally don’t share or understand the intricate differences and resentments of people living in the region their parents or grandparents came from. No one really has a problem with it except for some FOBs and socially maladjusted people and it’s not intended to make sense to people actually living in those countries.

Pingala also invented binary combinatorics as a method to represent prosodic metres.
Replying to @Rexy_6d
And there are names to attach: Pingala's work on Sanskrit prosody (c. 200 BC) hints at it, Virahanka (c. 600–800 AD) states the rule, then Gopala (c. 1135) and Hemachandra (c. 1150), all counting rhythms made of long and short syllables, decades before Liber Abaci (1202). Residual India :(
This is conceptually a good site: shilakosh.neocities.org/ It has several 3D scans of images from Nepal, including over 70 pre-lichChAvI images, which are among the earliest surviving records of neo-Hindu iconography. Unfortunately, there are fewer images of such antiquity in core India due to the marUnmatta thoD-foD. The scans provided at the site are, however, of very poor quality. A similar project should be done for the images in residual India, especially the earliest ones. Some of the notable pre-lichChAvI images are: 1. Early mAtR^ikA-s from Balkhu, 2. Forgotten mAtR^ikA-s from Kirtipur 3. mahiShmardinI from Hadigaon 4. standing rudra from Balambu 5. 3 headed rudra from Chikamangal mistaken for brahman these days. 6. A well-preserved classical viShNu from Hadigaon 7. aShtAbhuja-viShNu chaturAtman from Kutubahal -- the earliest surviving chaturAtman 8. A pa~nchabrahma li~Nga from Balkhu 9. hayagrIva, Hadigaon 10. kaumArI, Maligaon (termed "mother goddess") 11. An ithyphallic archaic rudra, Kirtipur 12. varAha, Siddhapokhari

The stink of new money is hard to wash off.
When I went to buy my BMW, the salesperson insisted that I take a test drive. Now, here’s the thing. I had never driven a BMW before. In fact, I had never even sat inside a luxury car. I had made a promise to myself long ago: The first time I sit inside a BMW or a Mercedes, it will be when I can afford to buy one. So, when that day finally came, I was hesitant to take the test drive. I was worried I might accidentally damage the car. But the salesperson insisted, and I finally agreed. A few minutes into the drive, he asked me to switch to Sport mode, take the car up to 110 km/h, and drive over a speed breaker without slowing down. And then he casually said, “Dekho sir, feel nahi hua na?” I was already sold on the car before I even entered the showroom. But that one experience increased its aura tenfold in my eyes. I went there to buy a BMW. He made me understand why I wanted one.

100% agree. Doing massive damage is what it’s doing. Separating humans from being human.

Hard disagree. SampradAyas are the only reason Hinduism survives in a recognisable form in the South. The decline of shastric hinduism in the North is a direct result of the destruction of sampradAyas and common affiliation to them.

I don't think a lot of liberals understand the glee with with Muslim-Americans (and other Muslims across the world) view the current digital zeitgeist about India and Indians. They despise India racially, they despise Hindus dogmatically, and they equate India to Hindus. Add Modi and Kashmir to the mix and they have enough purchase from liberal spaces to engage in this.
I’ve often come across random people on this site across the aisle labeling Zaid as “dishonest.” I never really read his stuff but recently he’s been coming on my feed more often. He raises his voice for Palestine (all good) continuously yet calls Indians third-worlders for simply wanting to be called “Indian” lol. Calling out Islamophobia (absolutely his right) yet calling people condemning Hinduphobia as “unassimilated” (wow where have we heard this from?) fobs. A lot of his barbs against Indian-Americans are indistinguishable from groyper - Third Worlder, unassimilated, caste canards, etc… I think I understand this “dishonest” characterization now. The most ironic part is that Zaid is displaying the exact tribalism that he says he is against – more or less being indistinguishable from a South Asian uncle fresh off the boat who still needs to sort out the legality of his cousin marriage.

Uncanny valley. Douglas Adams describes it thus "He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea”

Nicobar Effect. An aesthetic that a white person or an ABCD thinks is Indian and can even pass off as Indian globally. But to a resident Indian, something feels off, and it's hard to put a finger on what exactly. Nicobar Effect is different from stereotyping. There's no bad intent. It comes from a place of wanting to do it right. But since final decision-making control lies with someone who is not a resident Indian (or the output is meant for a global audience), the output will reflect that blind spot in the process.

No one has forgotten Indra All pujas start with, among other prayers “शचीपुरंदराय नमः” Indra is an also invoked along with his weapon as part of devas governing directions - “इंद्राय वज्रहस्ताय” Moreover, Krishna affirms he is Indra among devas - देवानामस्मि वासव:
10th November is Govardhan Puja, the day Krishna stopped the Indra Mahotsava. That was perhaps the grandest festival this land ever had. I think that was a mistake, and it’s time we fixed it. This Govardhan Puja, and every one after, take a moment to remember Devraj Indra alongside Krishna ji. He is the king of the heavens, the king of will and desire. He doesn’t ask for grand gestures. In a land that has almost forgotten him, two words of prayer will reach him directly: ॐ इन्द्राय नमः Om Indraya Namah Ask him to set you on the path of excellence, to make you the best at whatever you desire. Ask him to make you strong, and to break every wall in your way, the way he broke the rock and set the rivers free. The new year is less than two months away. Make him a promise that you’ll end it stronger, wiser, wealthier and happier. Then go make that true. And every time you do something brave, something that scared you, offer it to him: इदं इन्द्राय Idam Indraya, “This is for Indra.” If you want a longer prayer, chant the Indra Gayatri 7 times: ॐ सहस्रनेत्राय विद्महे वज्रहस्ताय धीमहि। तन्नो इन्द्रः प्रचोदयात्॥ And if you want a challenge, read Rigveda 2.12. Its refrain is स जनास इन्द्रः, That, O people, is Indra. In the Harivamsa, after Govardhan, Indra came down, bathed Krishna and crowned him Govinda. They made their peace. But we somehow never did. India is young and hungry again, and it wants to be the best at everything it touches. That hunger has always had a god. And he is still here, still waiting to be called by the people who once gave him a quarter of the Rigveda. Krishna gave us the mountain. Let’s give Indra back his sky.

Let me ask you… If India’s Metro network had continued expanding at the pace it did before 2014, how long would the wait be for cities like Pune to have a metro? YEARS….no…DECADES perhaps. And that was UNACCEPTABLE. In 2014, India had just 248 km of Metro lines across 5 cities. Today, we have nearly 1,200 km across 26 cities. Over 1 crore people travel by Metro every day. The impact goes beyond statistics or numbers. It means less time in traffic, more family time, greater productivity and better opportunities. This is the transformation we are working towards for urban India!
What makes Pune Metro's new Pink Line so special? 23 km connecting Hinjewadi's IT hub with Shivajinagar. Operated by women. Almost a third of the electricity needs planned from solar energy. Tomorrow, this Rs. 8,300 crore infra enhancement will be inaugurated! A significant boost to 'Ease of Living' for Pune! pib.gov.in/PressReleaseDetai…

One always wonders if paninian rules maybe reworked to describe some of these sandhi phenomena in Arabic.
Rustum is misinforming others regarding basic Arabic grammar. The short "-u" in "ʿabdu" is the "ḍammah" which indicates that the noun is in marfuʿ state while the "r" arises due to assimilation of the "l" of the definite article "al-" with the "r" of "raḥmān" as rāʾ in Arabic is a classed as a solar letter. The ʾalif of the definite article "al-" is hamzatu l-waṣlⁱ (i.e. the connecting hamzah), so the vowel of the preceding word connects directly to the lām and the ʾalif is elided. The ʾalif of the Arabic word ism ("name") is also hamzatu l-waṣlⁱ This is why the basmalah is recited as bi-smi l-lāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm and not bi ʾismi ʾallāhi ʾal-raḥmāni ʾal-raḥīm.

Here's what gives me goosebumps w.r.t. rAmAyaNa Not the snazzy movie doing the rounds But the telugu brahmin family next door who have their doors open all the time. As I walk past their house, I see a Telugu channel on TV featuring a pravachana on vAlmIki rAmAyaNam covering a few anuShtubh shlokas every morning For a parallel, try imagining Homeric early Iron Age verses in dactylic hexameter blaring out of people's houses This is the classical age surviving around us in the ambient soundtrack of one's neighborhood. As opposed to lectures in classrooms and seminars

Ass-face is a samastapada समस्तपद and ass face is an incorrect expression.
The hotel owned by his son-in-law (one of which is Kaul’s own house) and the legal practice of his daughter isn’t the story, ass face. The story is that it was all paid for by a shady businessman called Sahul Agarwal, while Kaul was still a judge. The gravy train continued post-retirement. You know that already. But I guess Diwali party deals are far too lucrative to be honest.

I don’t think Kashmiri has ध sound (or other sounds in chaturtha varga - भ, झ or ढ) I am inclined to believe the original is दर only.

This and the shame of having been evicted. This shame drove some to deny it ever happened.
It’s not just a Kashmiri Pandit phenomenon; you see this across almost every educated community in India. Much of the Western intellectual influence, including liberalism, wokeism and evolutionary thought, initially found its way into India through communities that accessed English education early. That generation gained access to prestigious positions, financial security and social capital, which subsequent generations inherited and built upon. An English-educated elite often began seeing itself as socially and intellectually distinct from those it considered backward or less progressive. That class divide has continued across generations. Interestingly, much of the grassroots Right-wing support across India comes from the middle and lower-middle classes, with perhaps Gujarat and Rajasthan being notable exceptions to this broader pattern. @Grok Which community or region in India has highest no of communists and why ?

The Indian expression of math is in grammar and prosody that is where one should look for sophistication.
Greeks were able to create proof-based theorems because they had the kind of democratic inclusive institutions which demanded proof; Indians were not that lucky. Extractive empires focused on religion; as a result, mathematics didn't see as much sophistication as philosophy.
