According to the publication, at least three tankers carrying Russian diesel set sail toward the US in mid-October after Trump temporarily allowed such supplies. The vessels are scheduled to arrive at American ports after the midterm elections, but there are still no buyers for the cargo. Instead of the US, the tankers may be redirected to Brazil, which is already purchasing significant volumes of Russian diesel fuel. While the White House tried to cook up a temporary waiver, the strict sanctions from the EU, Canada, and the U.K. remain fully in place, leaving these vessels legally toxic worldwide. State leaders like those in New Jersey are stepping up, threatening legal blocks to keep these rogue vessels away from regional ports. Lawmakers, including Senator Richard Blumenthal are warning shipping companies and ports that executive loopholes do not override federal congressional laws banning Russian oil.
