I argue instead that the concept of sovereign rights drawn from the law of the sea is a better way to think of the nature of state authority over sovereignty.

(Also, y'all have been forewarned that this article is also a vessel for many bad nautical puns that have been knocking around my head, starting with the title!)

Even if Craigslist, Google & Facebook disappeared tomorrow, the ad revenue wouldn't magically flow back to publishers. Certainly not enough to support the level of journalism that we need. Democratic societies should have never allowed news media to become so commercialized.

One casualty of this debacle is that it's turned many journalists into propagandists for a very flawed government initiative. The job of journalism is to fairly cover Big Tech *and* government. I'm not bashing one in support of the other. The CAJ does not represent me.
Google & Facebook have shut out Canadian news orgs from their platforms and decided to be dictators of what information Canadians can search, discover and consume. This violates the very foundations of an open internet. Corporate selfishness is kneecapping Canadian democracy.

The logic of these bills start to make sense if you think of it this way: "These companies made a profit. Therefore, those profits should be directed in ways that I, personally, see fit." And then skip over the details.

Much of the public discourse today indicates clearly that many people never understood what Affirmative Action was and how it worked. It was never about admitting unqualified black students over their white or Asian peers. It was only 64 years ago (see image) that US

The key thing to understand about this is that the crisis in legacy media funding is real. The government was probably always going to be pressured into doing SOMETHING. But the thing they chose to do was bad. They were warned. They did it anyway. And made things much worse.

As I've said before, bad laws produce bad outcomes.
Cannot overstate the harm from this: news sector loses hundreds of millions, Canadians face degraded search results, and prominence of low-quality sources increase. Blame squarely on @pablorodriguez who did not take risks of flawed Bill C-18 seriously. xitter.cf/mgeist/status/16744682…

There is apparently someone spoofing my Twitter account and encouraging people to click to a fake Telegram account. I’m blocked from viewing. My old blue check is gone and the pay-to-play checks are meaningless, but please don’t be duped by other accounts that are fakes.

The bombing was carried out by Canadians, and most of the victims were Canadians. If Canada had truly embraced and understood it, and shared lessons, further tragedies, including 9/11, could have been avoided. Continuing my work in this field at the United Nations

The Air India anniversary comes with the usual lies from the bomber's fans, howling that he was framed, the Indian gov't blew up its own plane, etc. And a new poll suggests most Canadians are dimly aware of the ghastly facts. A brief reminder, then? 1/10 vancouversun.com/news/nation…
