Breath mechanisms similar/same. Certainly helpful for compromised cords. Thinking in a singing way most helpful. Interesting discussion. Away now for much needed R & R. Anon.

I agree, but actors and singers work in very similar ways when using there voices, coming from a singing way of speaking (if that makes sense). Encouraging similar in my work with voices compromised through illness, helps.

Yes, I agree, but by encouraging this cycle of better controlled breath in singing, it can be transferred to speech to help prevent cough & sensitivity habits, in the same way actors use their voices. After all, many clients in SFLH are also looking to improve speaking voice too.

My instinctive response as to why? The continuous circle of the breath? Inhale, singing on exhale, inhale out of sing phrase. Over simplistic I know, but I am certain that’s the really important thing to note.

But there’s also the cognitive and motor differences. Singing is a different pathway than speaking and I *suspect* this interrupts any cough sensitivity or habits. Vibrations also likely have a calming effect as does slow airflow and positive expiratory pressure.

We don’t breathe well to speak. In my classes we do speak the phrases through & breathe as if sung & I encourage to breathe & speak this way outside class too.

Some quick thoughts off the top of my head: extending exhale (need to cough on exhale so theoretically control helps), desensitization from oral motor control and better pharyngeal awareness, release of tension, better breath control, reduced mucus viscosity, distraction

And learning to sing can help people cough more effectively, or learn to stop it all together! When taught well, singing is a rehab super power!

So many little nuances relating to breath, tension, posture and articulators!

And 2, I tackle much of this in the breakout session that’s part of the SOVT 1 course. The video below is an excerpt but the whole thing is on the Learning Lounge now (and SOVT 2 is coming shortly).
Great thread, thank you!
