Oxford Street can't carry on as it is. But if it is going to be pedestrianised, it has to be done properly, with Westminster residents and businesses listened to, not pushed through the way the Mayor wants. Well said @ThomasFTurrell.
The status quo on Oxford Street can't continue - if the street must be pedestrianised, it should be done properly - not the way the Mayor is pursuing, says @ThomasFTurrell

🏛️ Labour's Budget tomorrow: a Family Home Tax, a £100m cut almost halving Westminster's core funding, and more money for Sadiq Khan's pet projects. Westminster sends £8.8bn a year to the Treasury. It deserves a fair deal. #WestminsterMatters

A new AI lab has just emerged from London and it has raised a $40m seed. It is the largest ever robotics seed in the UK and the company has built a foundational model designed to achieve instant learning. i.e. show a robot something ONCE and it will learn how to do it. It was founded by a Professor of Robot Learning at Imperial College London (@Ed__Johns) Their model is trained entirely in simulation, so instead of learning specific tasks, it learns how to learn. Then when you give it one real demonstration, on objects it’s never seen, it picks the task up instantly. This is VERY COOL and it is amazing to see more and more frontier AI companies coming out of London. Huge congrats to the whole @Machenta_ team

Oxford Street is set to be pedestrianised on Monday. The change to what is often called the world’s longest shopping street is controversial and opposed by Westminster Council. But London Mayor Sadiq Khan, having taken control of the area via the Oxford Street Development Corporation, hopes pedestrianisation will revive its flagging fortunes and bring back the shoppers in the run-up to Christmas. ✍️ Alex Klaushofer Article | spectator.com/article/pedest… | @alexklaushofer

Closing much of Oxford Street to traffic may be a good thing in principle, but yesterday I watched buses struggling to navigate turning off, causing gridlock. I think of people with disabilities who rely on buses&can’t walk long distances. Where is their public transport access?

I’m a cabdriver in London and 3 times this morning passengers have asked me to take them to Selfridges and John Lewis. I say I can’t get them there, they say is it a demo, I say no it’s closed permanently. They decide to go Harrods instead. Business killer.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Taxis cannot drive along the new pedestrianised section of Oxford Street but dedicated ranks on side streets (e.g. Orchard St/Duke St by Selfridges, Holles St by John Lewis) allow drop-offs within ~100m of the stores. tfl.gov.uk/status-updates… tfl.gov.uk/oxford-street londoncorporatecabs.com/news/oxford-st…

A few things come to mind. What a way to kill nightlife even further. What about the people who rely on night buses to get to and from work? And surely this will make phone theft even easier. Those criminals on e-bikes are going to have a field day.
A momentous day for London. I’m so excited to see our plans to transform Oxford Street becoming a reality. And this is just the beginning.

Oxford Street is traffic-free from today. Tim Barnes (@voteTimBarnes) told Sky News why the Mayor has done "completely the opposite" of Barcelona: the one great east-west road closed, traffic pushed into Mayfair, Soho, Marylebone and Fitzrovia. #WestminsterMatters #Westminster

So now we must use the tube only which costs double the amount? £1.75 for the bus. £3.50 for the tube. Ofc, it hardly matters when you’re not someone who counts it all.
Brilliant news. Now let’s extend it across central London.

Cyclists are continuing to ride along the newly pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, despite being asked to dismount. Around seven security staff have been stationed near Oxford Circus, calling out to cyclists to get off their bikes, with mixed success.
