John Olerud is a legendary Coug and a great Washingtonian. It was an honor to attend the dedication of his statue in Pullman. When John was a Cougar and shutting down the Huskies year after year, I was a UW student. Grudging respect? Absolutely. Fan? Not so much. In his rookie MLB year, I took a trip to see a game in every stadium. It was exciting to see a kid from Washington state competing at the highest level when I saw John playing in Toronto, and since then, I've been a fan. As Governor, and as a dad to a fastpitch softball player, thank you for being an outstanding player and an exceptional role model.

Two big announcements today: I signed an executive order creating the state's first Chief Fraud Prevention Officer and a statewide fraud prevention workgroup to unify and expand our existing fraud prevention efforts. I will also propose legislation expanding the current Medicaid False Claims Act to cover all false claims against Washington state. False claims include things like overcharging the government or submitting false grant applications. This new law will help hold violators accountable. Washington state takes fraud seriously. As we continue to face challenging state budgets and devastating cuts from the federal government, it is more important than ever to protect every dollar.

The wildfires in Central and Eastern Washington destroyed 649 primary residences and damaged an additional 2,542 homes. More than 65,000 people were evacuated in Spokane County. Federal financial assistance is critical to help these communities recover and rebuild.

It was an honor to sign a cooperative agreement yesterday with Ambassador Karen Eva Abrahamsen of the Royal Danish Embassy. This next phase of our partnership focuses on areas like developing our ports and sustainable aviation fuel. We also look forward to working together on industrial symbiosis — making business more efficient by capturing waste from one industry and using it for another — an area where Washington state leads the nation. We're excited for further research and business partnerships, study and trade missions, and more. I'm proud to have this strong partnership with Denmark.

Last October, we reopened the White River Bridge weeks ahead of schedule. This closure was catastrophic for commuters and businesses. Since then, we've installed an over-height detection system for the bridge. We also made a historic investment in preserving our roads and bridges — a 36% increase. I will continue to make taking care of our roads and bridges a key focus of my administration.

Thursday afternoon, we learned that law enforcement intercepted a letter containing white powder addressed to the Washington Secretary of State's elections division. We are working closely with law enforcement to keep Washington election workers and voters safe and informed.
