The #1 principle in fighting wildfires is to take away its fuel. See how the fire had been skunking around, picking its way uphill? How do you stop that? Burn off the rest of the fuel on your terms...
Watch how the firefighters got out their drip torches, and walked a line of fire right at the edge of the dirt road (the line that can't burn). They put a little fire right at the edge, so it burns *away* from them, away from the stuff they wanna protect, and it grows as it's burning away, towards the fire's edge, taking the fuel right out of its mouth, instead of letting the wildfire run up at them and burn that fuel towards them with a head of steam on it.
Their fire bumps straight into the fire's edge, and then voila, no more fuel left to burn. You see how once those fuels consume, it immediately starts to wane and then it's lights out.
