Traveler. I follow roads where thought forgets its map. In foreign corners, silence speaks, knowledge wakes, and something within me arrives before I do.

Mid-Journey โ€” Years ago, in graduate school, I studied travel and mobility. But the research was never only theoretical. I was also traveling โ€” watching how movement, borders, and small encounters shape ordinary lives. Those thoughts slowly became small fragments on Twitter. Each one began with the same words: ๆ—…ใฎ้€”ไธŠ โ€” Mid-Journey. There were 365 of them. In 2023 they became a small book. Now I am walking that road again, turning those fragments into poems โ€” one each day until December 31. 365 fragments of a road.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at first, I carried home like a folded map, its familiar streets worn soft along the creases. Beyond the bus window, each unfamiliar town borrowed the colors of a place I had left, and every departure still pointed backward. Then came the days of staying. At a table beside a station, a woman set another cup beside her own. We spoke in broken phrases, and in the pauses something passed between us that neither language knew how to keep. Long after I left, I caught myself listening to silence in the way she had. One morning, at 7:17, a train shivered beneath the paling sky. The street I had known since childhood and the stranger's untranslatable silence met inside me, neither willing to disappear. In their quiet tension, a borderland openedโ€”โ€” not a line between two countries, but a place neither voice could claim alone. I had believed that home stood still, waiting at the far end of every journey. Yet as the platform slipped away, a country no map had named stirred beneath my ribsโ€”โ€” made of departures and the places I had stayed, of two voices that refused to become one. For the first time, I was not leaving home behind. Home was learning to travel.

I did not know if you still lived there, or whether your street still carried the sound of your footsteps. At dawn, the train crossed a river. #vss365 #fueling ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” the dining car swayed gently through the last hour of night, its silver spoons trembling against porcelain with every curve of the sleeping railway. Beyond the window, darkness flowed over fields I could only imagine. My reflection hovered in the glass, a stranger traveling beside himself. At the far end of the carriage, a waiter with sleepless eyes moved quietly between the tables, gathering the small remains of yesterday. He paused beside me and poured fresh coffee into my cup. A thin ribbon of steam rose between his tired hands and mine, carrying the bitter fragrance of something that promised morning. Neither of us spoke. Then the train emerged from a tunnel. Sunlight entered all at once, slipping over the white tablecloth, catching the edges of the spoons, turning the rising steam into threads of trembling gold. For an instant, the waiter's face was illuminated by a dawn he had worked all night to reach. He smiled almost imperceptibly and continued down the carriage, fueling the half-awake passengers one quiet cup at a time. Outside, the fields unfolded into green, and the horizon slowly loosened its last hold on the night. I had come looking for coffee. But there, in the trembling surface of my cup, the whole morning seemed to gatherโ€”โ€” not yet fully born, still learning how to shine. And as the train carried me toward a place I had never seen, I lifted the cup to my lips and drank the first light of the world.

#vss365 #fueling ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at 11:17 p.m., in a town whose name I still mispronounced, rain traced crooked rivers down the windows of a laundromat glowing at the end of an empty street. Inside, the dryers turned like captive moons, their amber circles breathing warmth into a night that smelled of wet pavement and the unfamiliar sweetness of soap. My clothes revolved behind the glassโ€”โ€” shirts and sleeves surrendering their shapes, as though the road itself were being washed out of them. Beside me, an old woman folded a child's socks beneath the fluorescent light, smoothing each tiny heel with her thumb as though the feet were still inside. Once, she held a little sweater to her cheek before folding it into a careful square. We spoke no common language. Only the soft thunder of turning drums filled the distance between us. Yet something in the way she touched that sweater made the foreign night feel less foreign. The machines kept turning, fueling a small, impossible summer in the heart of a town where I knew neither the streets nor the stars. When I carried my laundry back into the rain, the warmth pressed gently against my chest. And somewhere among those folded clothes, I felt I had been given something no machine could ever makeโ€”โ€” the tenderness of a home I had never entered.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” above a rain-dark street, the bandoneon breathed into the room. A floorboard sighed beneath my shoe, remembering a thousand other dances. Then your palm settled between my shoulder bladesโ€”โ€” a pressure scarcely heavier than breath. I had not decided to move when my heel began to rise. Something in your hand had reached something beneath my skin before either of us could name it. We turned. You paused. In that pause, I felt the next step gathering, quiet as a tide before it reaches shore. When I stood still, I sensed your weight shifting; when you stood still, the unfinished turn went on turning inside my ribs. No one had written this music. A hesitation became a measure, a breath held open the space between two notes. We followed a score our bodies were writing too quickly to read. Where your hand met my back, I could no longer tell which of us had begun to sway. Yet your hand remained your hand, and my back, my backโ€”โ€” while the invisible boundary between them moved with every breath. Then the bandoneon fell silent. Footsteps returned across the wooden floor. But neither of us stepped away. Beneath the quiet of our skin, an unfinished measure went on. And I wonderedโ€”โ€” had we been dancing all along, or was it the distance between us that had finally learned to dance?

And I began to wonder how much of the world we must leave untranslated to let it remain someone else's.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 #poem #poetry ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” on a dusty field in a foreign town, I rested my fingers on the raised red seams of a baseball softened by a hundred unfamiliar hands. Across the fading light, someone raised his glove, and I threw what I believed was a straight fastball. For a moment, it obeyedโ€”โ€” cutting a clean line through the evening air. But just before it reached the waiting glove, it drifted quietly off its promised line, as though the wind had whispered something the ball had never heard from me. The leather struck the mitt with a hollow sound. He caught it, looked at me, and smiled. I smiled back, wondering what he had seen in the small curve I had never meant to throw. Years later, I found those same red seams beneath the skin of wordsโ€”โ€” small ridges of memory, history, and longing that catch the air of another person's world and bend a meaning we believed was straight. Perhaps every word leaves the hand already carrying the possibility of another path. And somewhere between the one who speaks and the one who listens, it learns a language neither has entirely known. I remember that evening field, the fading light, the silence after the catchโ€”โ€” and how the ball came to rest inside his glove, while the straight line I had intended remained somewhere in the air between us.

A pigeon wandered into the silence; from a nearby cafรฉ, a spoon rang softly against a cup. Then the church bells began, their bronze voices spilling over the rain-washed roofs. The boy raised his bow once more. His uncertain notes rose into the spaces between the bellsโ€”โ€” and for one brief moment, the whole square was playing a song no one had rehearsed.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 #poem #poetry ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at 7:17 that evening, beneath a fading lamp, I opened my notebook to a page still carrying dust from the road. Beyond the window, a bus pulled away, bearing names I would never know. I had come to write my way out of the histories, customs, and borrowed truths that wrapped themselves around each foreign place. I gathered the unfamiliar into sentencesโ€”โ€” a street, a doorway, a voice in the rainโ€”โ€” as though the world might fit between two lines of ink. But every sentence had a border. Beyond it, someone remembered the same rain from another life, the same road from another journey. For a moment, our stories touched, their outlines softening in the dark, yet neither could speak for the other. I read the page again and heard what its narrow frame had silenced: the hours before my arrival, the footsteps that had crossed mine, the roads that would continue after I left. I knew that even the truest words could not restore what they left behind. And so I kept the words but left the margin whiteโ€”โ€” not as an emptiness to be conquered, nor a silence waiting to be filled, but as a place where untold lives might remain beyond my knowing. Perhaps this was the cleansing I had sought: not to make the world transparent, but to let my certainty grow thin until, through the spaces in my story, I could almost hear the stories that were never mine to tell.

A porter walked ahead of me, my heavy bag upon his shoulders, its strap digging into his skin. I asked if the weight was too much. He turned and smiled, then continued without a word. At a bend in the road, he stopped to catch his breath. Far below, a village stirred awake, thin threads of smoke rising from roofs still hidden in shadow. Perhaps someone waited for him there. Perhaps no one did. When he lifted my bag again, I reached out to help. He smiled once more, and adjusted the strap across his shoulder. For the rest of the climb, I watched the weight I had given him, wondering about the weight he had carried long before our paths had crossed.

#vss365 #sneakers ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” I came home after dark, sat beside the door, and loosened my travel-worn sneakers. From a narrow groove in one sole, a tiny white pebble slipped freeโ€”โ€” one clear note in the sleeping house. It was small enough to hide beneath my thumbnail, smooth on one side, rough on the other. I turned it slowly in my palm, trying to remember which road had lent it to me. No road came back. I placed it on the windowsill. Beyond the glass, the familiar street shone faintly after rain. Inside, a small piece of somewhere else rested quietly in the dark. At dawn, a narrow beam of sunlight crossed the sill and touched the stone. The room was no larger than before, yet somewhere within it, a distant road began againโ€”โ€” as though my journey had arrived a little later than I had.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” beneath a yellow lamp, I unfolded a map worn thin at its creases. I marked the towns where I had rested, then joined them with straight lines along the edge of a ruler. Months of wandering became a handful of quiet strokes of graphite. Not one remembered where the road had turned. Yet between those lines and the winding roads my feet remembered, another geography lay hidden. There was the hillside I climbed twice because a stranger had mistaken east for west, the doorway where I sheltered from sudden rain, the market where an old woman pressed an orange into my palm without asking where I came from. None of these had earned a dot upon the map. Yet those unmarked detours had carried me farther than the straight lines could ever tell. I laid the ruler aside. In the silence between the lines, I began to give the forgotten roads their voicesโ€”โ€” rain whispering against a roof, the warmth of an orange in my hand, a stranger calling out from a distant turning. And as the words unfolded, the roads began to open beneath my feet. The rain fell once more. The orange warmed my empty hand. Beyond the market, a narrow path appeared that I could not remember ever taking. I looked down. The map was still upon the desk, its straight lines undisturbed. The towns remained exactly where they had been. Yet somewhere between those lines, I was walking againโ€”โ€” first through places I remembered, then beyond the last turning of memory, toward a place my footsteps had never reached. I had unfolded the map to tell the story of a journey.
