Today's announcement will put untrained and unaccountable members of the military in an untenable position in our communities. It’s unnecessary, unwarranted, & a dangerous escalation of power in the Nation’s Capital simply because he can. (5/5)

Over the last two years, DC has experienced a 52% drop in violent crime and is now at a 30-year low. While any crime is one too many, every local leader in DC is committed to the work and progress of safer communities and preventing violence. (4/5)

We strongly oppose President Trump’s move to federalize @DCPoliceDept & deploy the National Guard. While we acknowledge the need for additional public safety resources, not at the cost of our limited home rule. Full statement at ward8dems.com #Ward8 #FeeDC #HandsoffDC

DC is unique.
While we pay taxes and uphold the responsibilities of citizenship, we're not a state. We don't control the DC National Guard and we don't have senators or full autonomy.
That's why you've heard me and many other Washingtonians advocate for DC statehood.
Here's where we stand after today's announcement: we will follow the law, work with federal officials, and continue the work we do every single day to keep DC safe, beautiful, and the best city in the world.

My number one priority is the safety of District residents and visitors. It's why I've worked every day as Chair of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety alongside the Mayor, the AG, MPD, and my Council colleagues, to drive down violent crime to the lowest it's been in 30 years.
The work continues to ensure safety is a reality for all, but that work is not accomplished by federal intervention in our local police department or dispatching hundreds of federal troops into our streets.
What's happening? A federal takeover of our city. We don't need the National Guard. We need statehood. We need freedom from government control. We need sanity, not disorganization and chaos. We need our budget back. We need a fighter to fight for us. Not a weak man.
Barrack Row Independence Day Parade is coming soon!
