“Civil society - which is not only registered NGOs but includes social movements, workers & communities claim their rights - are working in n a increasingly restricted civic space” - @Alanaxxv from End Water Poverty #ASC2023 #ClaimYourWaterRights – at The Hague, The Netherlands

“Citizens & human rights defenders in the Global South are facing pressures that citizens in Global North do not - their safety is threatened, they lack resources & struggle to hold power-holders accountable.” - @gabrielrochab from @ProDESC #ASC2023 #AllSystemsConnect2023

Gabriel Rocha @ProDESC "Systems connecting is about people connecting. So there is always a power difference. To level this out we need 3 things 1) to ensure safety and civic space, 2) importantly, resources to civil society, and better accountability" @gabrielrochab

"401 #HumanRightsDefenders were killed last year alone, according to @FrontLineHRD. The countries where the majority of them were killed include Colombia, México... but most were in the Global South" - @gabrielrochab (@ProDESC) #HearingTheUnheardHRWS #ASC2023

"Where the rights to water & sanitation have been realised, it's been realised by people. And this was not handed to them, it was fought for" - @gabrielrochab (@ProDESC) #HearingTheUnheardHRWS #ASC2023

"If we're serious about systems change, we need to be realistic about where the funding is going. Most people are accessing their water through informal systems, we need to see more investment in self-supply" @VirginiaRoaf #HearingTheUnheardHRWS #ASC2023

"It's not that people are helpless, aren't able to articulate their demands or are unaware of their rights. They are advocating & engaging their governments. But they are unheard, they are ignored" - @VirginiaRoaf (PhD student at @UniversityLeeds) #HearingTheUnheardHRWS #ASC2023

"When we talk about water & sanitation, there isn't a level playing field. 61% of working adults are working in the informal economy & they are often directly affected by the lack of basic services" - Kelebogile Khunou (@SERI_RightsSA) #HearingTheUnheardHRWS #ACS2023

"This campaign has a life beyond #ASC2023, it's also a political statement, it's a call to action to policy- and decision-makers. The video includes testimonies from over 54 marginalised groups in over 18 countries." - @NathalieXelAgua from @FANMex #HearingTheUnheardHRWS

We’ll also be hearing from Kelebogile Khunou @SERI_RightsSA; Nathalie Seguin @FANMex; Gabriel Rocha @ProDESC; Timothy Kpeh @KpehTimothy6; Khumbulani Maphosa @MatHumanRights, & @VirginiaRoaf who will be discussing the issues raised in the film. #HearingTheUnheardHRWS
