A new kind of microscope can change the depth it focuses on with a small voltage, instead of moving its lenses. 🔬 A POSTECH team in South Korea led by Junsuk Rho and Chulhong Kim built it around a metalens, a flat lens made of tiny patterned structures, as reported by Phys.org. It uses photoacoustic imaging, where laser light absorbed by tissue creates sound waves that are turned into a picture, and the study is published in Light: Science & Applications. → A liquid-crystal cell, the kind used in smartphone screens, changes the light's polarisation, and the metalens focuses each setting at a different depth, switching in about 0.25 seconds → The two focus modes together covered about 1.2 mm of depth, with detail of roughly 3 to 4 micrometres, fine enough to see tiny blood vessels → So far it has been tested on the eyes of mice and offers two fixed depths; the team points to eye imaging as a possible use, but it has not been tried in people #WorldInnovation #Optics #MedTech Open the WeAD Platform to see it. @soneium @StartaleApp @StartaleGroup @weadvertize (Soundchains Community)

A gel inspired by sea cucumbers, which can stiffen and soften their bodies, could one day help damaged tendons heal. 🌊 University of Waterloo engineers made the water-rich gel, known as a hydrogel, as a temporary scaffold: new tissue grows into it while the gel slowly breaks down, as reported by Phys.org. The work, by an international team, was published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials. → The gel is frozen to set its inner structure, then soaked in salt solutions that make it softer or firmer for different tissues → In rats with damaged tendons, it supported more organised new tissue than stitches alone and was absorbed by the body over about eight weeks → So far it has only been tested in rats; studies in larger animals and, eventually, clinical trials are still needed #WorldInnovation #Biotech #MaterialsScience Open the WeAD Platform to see it. @soneium @StartaleApp @StartaleGroup @weadvertize (Soundchains Community)
