Taboo writing framework
One lyric writing exercise I borrow logic from is Taboo writing. Like the game
Pick what the song is actually about, then ban yourself from using the words most directly associated with it
Writing about censorship?
Maybe you cannot use censorship, silence, freedom or control
Now you have to write around the idea
That constraint forces you toward images, consequences and actions instead of simply naming the subject
that gives the listener something to do
If they have to connect the dots, read between the lines or decide what a lyric means for themselves, they become part of the song instead of just being told what it means
That little moment of realization matters
Oh, I get what they mean
Or even better:
I know what this means to me
It doesn't have to be a hard rule either, sometimes the obvious word is still the right word
The value is in taking away the easiest vocabulary long enough to find something the listener can discover for themselves
