"I agree it’s a huge problem that needs addressing. I don’t know the answer, sorry. This is not my area of expertise, but I am happy to take your views on it, listen, and learn. Ensuring geographic fairness absolutely should form a core part of the WRU's strategy moving forward.

(1/4) There's a limit to how much money the WRU can generate - and to how much of that total pot they can give to our pro teams (without underfunding the other crucial parts of the Welsh rugby ecosystem).

Fantastic piece. 👍
There is ONLY ONE WAY that Welsh rugby can ever be truly "collective", "connected" and "aligned". And that's by working together on a true regional system at pro level that includes ALL OF WALES - and sits between our historic clubs and the national side.

If Wales can afford to keep 4 pro teams (highly unlikely) - then these should be true regional entities that include ALL OF WALES and sit between our historic clubs & the national side. There's nothing bold about persevering with the defective structure that caused this crisis.

Sadly, that is the reality. Continuing with 4 is totally out of the question. And the sooner everyone accepts that the better.
Then we can start sensibly discussing how to reduce to 3.
East, West & North is by far the best option for a coherent 3 team system. 👍

Would be nice if all Welsh clubs and fans were treated equally.
Would be nice if every part of Wales was fairly included by true regional teams at professional level.
When will you be making an honest public statement about this kind of equality and inclusion please?

Absolutely brilliant from Sam. The guy has so much integrity & really cares deeply about what's best for Welsh rugby as a whole.
So good to hear him being open about the coach and the financial director also being keen on the idea of merger to form a massive East Wales team. 👍

Bizarre from @SeneddCultureIR
The @SeneddWales represents ALL OF WALES
The @WelshRugbyUnion represents ALL OF WALES
The 4 "regions" represent only small parts of South Wales.
It's time for unity.
It's time for collaboration.
It's time for a fully inclusive regional system.

Spot on Paul. 👍
There isn't enough money for 4 teams. ❌
Makes no sense to cull the most successful region. ❌
Makes no sense to remove pro rugby from the 2nd largest population centre. ❌
There's no long term thinking. Just self preservation. 😞

Regional or provincial rugby is a complete package. It doesn't work if you mix regional teams in with standalone historic clubs. The current system is messy and incoherent and inefficient. It has been given far more money than it deserves and it has failed beyond all question.

That's spot on. We haven't heard anything close to a viable alternative. Carrying on with 4 is totally out of the question. Every sane observer knows that. And wanting ALL OF WALES (the WRU) to pay for Llanelli, Cardiff & Newport superclubs is totally out of the question too.

It's a collective action problem - when individuals (or clubs) acting in their own self-interest produce an outcome that is worse for everyone.
Rational individual behavior (self preservation) can often lead to collectively irrational outcomes (harming Welsh rugby as a whole).

Yup. We've been split into 2 camps for far too long. Those who want...
1) ...to work together on a pro rugby system that includes every club & fan in every part of Wales.
2) ...their small patch to occupy a privileged position, while large parts of Wales are alienated/excluded.

Spot on Owen. Our failure to form a true regional system - between clubs & country - when the game went pro - has caused this crisis. We're suffering the inevitable effects of the mistakes of 2003. All our great historic clubs should be feeding into larger inclusive entities.

No. We need NEW teams… 3 larger, well-spaced (true) regional teams to replace the 4 small, tightly-packed (sham) regions.
Bigger territories from which to draw players & fans - and for commercial growth & sponsorship etc. 👍
A national system, not M4 corridor rugby. 🏴

Cardiff - 360,000 - like a small cafe that serves only hot chocolate.
Newport - 170,000 - like a small cafe that serves only tea.
The rest of EAST WALES... ~920,000.
Time to knock the 2 small unviable cafes into 1 large cafe that serves hot chocolate, tea AND COFFEE. Cheers 👍

Surely the point isn't that there should be a pro team in "the valleys", but that "the valleys" should be fairly included and represented by a true regional pro team - wherever it's based? Every part of Wales should be. WRU funding should be contingent on full regional inclusion.
Project Reunion retweeted
On the contrary. Our suggestions are ALL about financial and commercial common sense. Your arguments are ALL about emotion.
Which is why Martyn Ryan (@Bearshed57) correctly said this back in 2017...

We barely have the money to keep these current 4 teams alive, let alone improve the development pathways.
The need to invest more in this area is probably the biggest reason why reducing to 2/3 teams is essential.
And you're spot on - that means 2/3 new entities. 👍
