The Witch Up In the Sky still haunts me. My parents spent years wondering why I couldn't sleep. It wasn't the thunder, it was Mumfie.
Appreciating the menu indeed. The one time I transferred points it went to Emirates via Dubai and I got 3000 AED in hotel vouchers out of it. The bill never hurt so good.
Appreciation Day 💟
Marriott Bonvoy's airline partner list deserves applause.
ANA, Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, United… even my travel bucket list has fewer options.
The transfer ratios? Today we're appreciating the menu, not checking the bill. 😂

In a few weeks it'll be 5 years since my debut novel, Powerless, came out. It's hard to believe it's been that long. It seems to have whizzed by in some ways but also a lot has happened in those years personally.
Lovely to see the club's ticket system being respected so thoroughly. Fifteen hashtags and a DM. I'll stick to the official ballot and losing like a proper fan, ta.

If the UK government had shown up with the money, I'd agree entirely. It didn't, and former council leaders said no other developers were willing or able. Rather homes than a principle.

Here we go again. I'm not complaining about the investment but the fact that it didn't come from the UK government. Do we expect every region to rely on overseas countries for development ? No that's not going to happen. The UK government should be investing in regions.

Which would be fine if the Premier League was worth it.
So the city couldn't get a single other investor, Emirates money built nearly 5,000 homes, and I'm meant to believe this counts as a scandal. Because nothing says 'bad deal' like houses people actually live in.

WATCH OUT FOR YOUR PURSE: This early 70s PIF warns housewives to keep an eye on their purses whilst shopping. Judging by the looks they're giving him, that purse snatcher is what passed for sexy in the 70s.
Quite. It's the same as publishers slapping 'accessible' on a cover. Could mean anything. Usually means nothing. Been selling books long enough to spot the pattern. #BookshopLife
City lose to Villa and suddenly everyone's an accountant. I read the Guardian piece: the investment restarted development nobody else would touch. 14,000+ jobs. Peculiar how that never makes the banter posts. #TitleRace
THE PREMIER LEAGUE TITLE RACE HAS JUST BEGUN! 😭🏆
Arsenal lost to Brighton, and suddenly, the whole world started predicting a Manchester City title win.
But one thing I know about this Arsenal side is that whenever Mikel Arteta loses a game, he has a habit of responding with a winning streak.
We might not see another defeat until 2027, that's typical Arteta over the years 😭
And remember, October is historically one of Arsenal's strongest months.
Now look at the numbers. 👀
Enzo Maresca spent £450M in his first season at Manchester City and has 21 points after eight matchweeks.
Mikel Arteta spent £150M last summer and, despite all the injuries, has the same 21 points after just seven Premier League matches.
The weekend's results?
🔵 Chelsea lost 2-0 to Tottenham.
🔵 Manchester City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.
🔴 Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 at the Emirates.
This week, football won.
The clubs facing serious financial scrutiny couldn't find their feet, while Arsenal kept collecting points.
One day, everyone will have to confront reality. And if there's one thing rival fans should be praying for, it's that Mikel Arteta never gets his hands on the Champions League trophy. Because if he does, the noise will be unbearable. 😭🏆
By January, I believe Arsenal could have one hand on the Premier League title, with the Champions League becoming the next major target.
The title race is far from over. But Arsenal are still standing, and that's what matters. 🔴⚪️

Bloom said it better than I ever could, but I'll add: I sell Wordsworth to roughly three people a week and not one has asked about his views on the French Revolution. They just want the daffodils. #BookshopLife
'There is a current fashion in Anglo-American criticism of the materialist and New Historicist varieties— odd mixtures of Marx and Foucault—to condemn Wordsworth for not having remained political enough, once he had given up his early support for the French Revolution. By 1797 Wordsworth had surmounted a long political and psychic crisis, and his poems ceased to urge political solutions for social distress. “The Old Cumberland Beggar,” The Ruined Cottage, “Michael,” and Wordsworth’s other poems that depict the sufferings of the English lower classes are masterpieces of compassion and profound feeling, and only shallow ideologues could reject them on political grounds. Our new breed of academic moralists should reflect upon the reception of Wordsworth’s poems by Shelley, politically the Leon Trotsky of his day, or by radicals like Hazlitt and Keats. What Shelley, Hazlitt, and Keats marvelously realized was that Wordsworth had a miraculous genius for teaching one how to feel sympathy for those in all manner of distress. If our academic commissars knew how to read, Wordsworth might humanize them, which is the great program of his poems like The Ruined Cottage.'

Why has David Livingstone, one of Scotland’s most famous abolitionists, come under criticism over his links to slavery?
In this article for History Reclaimed, Doug Stokes examines Livingstone’s inclusion in Glasgow City’s "Slavery and Atlantic Commerce" report and questions its treatment of a man whose life’s mission was to help end slavery.
