I am on the market this year! In my JMP, I study the interaction of UI extensions and local labor market concentration using matched employer-employee data from the LEHD.

Looking forward to presenting today at ~6pm ET at the Stanford Remote Work Conference. Naturally, there's a live-stream:

Three topics today tailor-made for me: measuring remote work, online job postings, and ongoing changes to cities. Can't wait.
Our remote work conference is next Weds 12th to Friday 14th October and will be streamed live (see conference program link below). There are 22 research papers on #WFH measurement, causes and impact. Each paper has 20 mins talk then 10 mins Q&A.

If you're doing something to preserve privacy, it'll probably receive a decent amount of deference, because who could be against preserving privacy, right? But walking through what's actually happening can make that deference seem questionable...

Very cool investigative data work - speaks to how to square self-employment numbers in the CPS with tax record data
Very excited to finally be able to share my working paper with Emilie Jackson and @dkoust

TLDR: Self-employment trends in tax data looked like they were picking up on a big rise in gig work that surveys were missing. That's not what was going on.

[Thread 5] Drug testing. There were a smattering of stories about employers eliminating drug testing requirements to make it easier to hire, also overdose deaths exceeded 100k last year. So we included some questions about employer drug testing.
Adding to the thread this interesting tidbit.
Transportation and warehousing is the only sector drug or alcohol testing at more than half of the establishments

What, last week’s crazy jobs report wasn’t enough labor market data for you? @BLS_gov is out today with a truly massive trove of data on how businesses dealt with the pandemic. Great roundup here:
Thread of threads for the @BLS_gov 2021 employer Business Response Survey released Feb 9th.
Published over 200 tables today for the 82,487 responses from a nationally representative sample.

[Thread 7] Pay increases by state. End of the survey coincided with the expanded UI benefits ending. Did states with higher replacement rates have more establishments reporting having increased pay?
(2) On this crude measure - correlation coefficient by state - answer seems to be no. Using @p_ganong's very helpful estimates for average UI replacement rates. Similarly weak correlation looking at replacement rates without expansion benefits.
@arindube you may find these numbers related to pandemic UI of interest

[Thread 8] Independent contractors and automation by size. Large establishments were much more likely to have started or increased use of temp help workers, and also more likely to use one of the types of automation.
The automation options were obviously not all-encompassing - but we had to give some options for what should be counted for automation. Here is the question with the different types

[Thread 6] Mask and Vaccine Requirements. Turns out there is a strong, positive relationship between states' employers having a mask requirement and a vaccine requirement for their employees. Reminder: survey was done July-September 2021.
(2) Also, we asked about incentives employers offered to employees to get vaccinated. 77% of large establishments that required the vaccine offered some incentive to get the vaccine (e.g., time off). Only 46% for small establishments.

[Thread 4] Increases in Pay by Industry. The top 5 sectors that reported increasing base wage (likely a permanent increase): food services, retail trade, health care, manufacturing, and warehousing.
(3) And @danielzhao - what you were talking about yesterday. Alternative work schedules have 4 of the 5 industries referenced above the national average.
Perhaps a non-pecuniary avenue for compensating lack of telework?

[Thread 3] Increases in Pay by Size. Larger establishments (54%) are more likely to report having increased pay over the pandemic (24%). But there is a caveat here....
(2) This difference seems to be entirely driven by temporary pay increases (first set of graphs), as opposed to permanent pay increases (second picture).

[Thread 2] Telework and Relocation
The three sectors that had highest % w/ increase in telework were also 3 most likely to relocate during pandemic.
Food services had lowest % increase in telework & least likely to relocate.

(4) Here is a crude look at state-by-state pattern. 6 of 10 states with most excess reported reduction in square footage are the 6 states with the highest home prices pre-pandemic.
