Ever seen a koala in the wild?” my guide, Dan Young, shouts over his shoulder as we climb a steep gravel track through eucalyptus trees into the shaded glens of the Adelaide Hills. After the roasting heat of the city it is a relief to get into the country, over the Mount Lofty Ranges, and sniff the crisp, damp air and feel the faintest suggestion of a cool breeze.
We are on bikes. Young owns and runs Bike About Tours (tours from £57pp; bikeabout.com.au), and this wine writer has done little in the way of exercise since he emerged, blinking, into the harsh white light of Adelaide airport five days ago. Fortunately, Young assures me that our first stop is not far off and, even better, we’re riding electric bikes.
“Let it do the work,” he shouts as I push down and the motor kicks in. It’s like freewheeling downhill. Within minutes we’ve climbed the hill and are cutting through the gently rolling meadows on our way to the picturesque Hahndorf, the oldest-surviving German settlement in Australia…

Great piece Will, thank you. If I follow your advice there's a danger I might sound sophisticated in the pub!

Great stuff - thanks Will! – at Lunsford's Cross, England
Sunday roasts are back. After a long summer of salads, barbecues and picnics, our thoughts are finally turning to the roasting tin. In our house the Aga goes back on, filling the kitchen with aromas of garlic and rosemary as a succulent leg of lamb slowly cooks in the top oven.
