Maintaining relationships as an autistic person is hard because I need my own space, but people mistake it as not caring.

Deactivating social media made me realise just how invisible I can be to people. No one calls. No one texts to check on me. No one seems to notice that I’ve gone quiet or wonder where I’ve been. It’s as if the moment I stopped showing up on their screens, I slowly stopped existing in their minds too. And there’s something deeply painful about realising how many connections seem to depend on your online presence. You can spend so much time interacting with people, watching their lives, keeping up with their updates and assuming you’re part of each other’s worlds, only to step away and realise how little effort some people make to maintain that connection outside of social media. It makes you wonder how many people genuinely think about you when you’re not constantly reminding them that you exist. How many would reach out simply because they miss you, want to hear your voice or care enough to ask how you’ve been. I know people get busy and silence doesn’t always mean someone doesn’t care. But it still hurts when you realise that if you stopped making yourself visible, you might stop hearing from people altogether. Disappearing from social media teaches you who remembers you when there’s nothing on their screen reminding them that you exist.

One piece of criticism hits an ADHD brain the way physical pain hits a neurotypical one.

Sometimes the hardest part of being neurodivergent isn’t the symptom itself. It’s having to explain your experience to people who assume that if you can do something once, you should be able to do it consistently.
Yes, I did that task yesterday. No, that doesn’t mean I can reliably recreate the exact same mental conditions today.

Actually, NOBODY likes you when you're depressed. Plain and simple. We can talk all day about MENTAL HEALTH and how important it is but the moment you are depressed, people really start to distance themselves.
They see you as NEGATIVE, a BURDEN, and someone too HEAVY to handle.

Passive suicidal ideation is not always about wanting to end your life; sometimes, it's wishing you could disappear, stop existing, or go to sleep without having to face another day. You're not necessarily seeking death; you're struggling to find relief from being alive.

At this point, people really NEED to normalize bed rotting on Saturdays and Sundays. Let yourself rest without feeling guilty. Not every weekend needs to be productive. Sometimes, doing absolutely NOTHING is exactly what you need. You deserve to rest, too.

Neurotypicals: Saturday! Time to relax and get things done.
ADHDers: Saturday. 48 hours of unstructured time where I will accomplish approximately nothing and still feel too stressed to enjoy it.1/2

Does anyone have a good response to "well everyone is a little bit autistic" that isn't just shrieking like a pterodactyl in the person's face?
