Bob Costas was 18 when his father dropped dead at JFK airport. At the wake, a man handed him a thick envelope with $6,000 in $100 bills. It was everything his father left behind, and a bookie would never have paid it to a dead man.
In the video below, he tells the story himself.
His father, John, was a big-time gambler. Not casinos, not racetracks. Ball games. Bob says the mortgage was literally riding on his bets.
When the games went the wrong way, he threw things, cursed and yelled. Bob’s mom and sister would leave. Bob stayed, because watching the games with his dad was the only way to be close to him.
Friday, May 15, 1970. A cop knocks on the door. Before he says a word, Bob’s mother asks, “My husband’s dead, isn’t he?” John Costas had a heart attack walking through JFK. He was 42.
At the wake, one of his gambling buddies walked in with the envelope. “Your father was up when he died. Give this to your mother.” A bookie never pays a dead man, so the friend went to the bookie himself and said John sent him to collect.
Decades later, Bob Costas refused to read sports betting ads on air. Today the bookie lives in everyone’s phone. Is that progress?

The night before Enron declared bankruptcy in 2001, I was looking through the telescope in my Houston apartment when I noticed people running on the lit-up top floors of Enron HQ. They were shredding. The next morning 7,000 people lost their jobs, including Elizabeth Holmes’ dad.

As the Cardinals get ready to face the Giants tomorrow, let's jump back to July 22, 1986, when one of the most bizarre and incredible brawls in MLB history took place between these teams.
It had EVERYTHING!
- Whitey Herzog and Giants manager Roger Craig got into a heated shouting then shoving match.
- Herzog wrestled with Joel Youngblood and Randy Kutcher.
- Players from both sides were throwing haymakers and dogpiling.
- Giants pitcher Mike Krukow suffered leg and rib injuries during the scuffle that landed him on the disabled list
- Police come on the field and get chased off by the umpires
- Cardinals catcher Mike Heath literally picked up Vince Coleman and carried him off the field into the dugout with a little help from Ozzie Smith

Dolly Parton says she once went through a period so dark, she understood why people turn to drugs and alcohol.
“Yes, I went through a bad period of time back in the ’80s when I was going through the change. I was having some female problems, family problems, emotional problems, and I was overweight. I didn’t feel good about myself at all, so I got myself in a pretty bad bind.”
“I understood at that moment how people get on drugs, how people get on alcohol, and how people can commit suicide. I didn’t do that because I kept praying, holding on to God, and hanging on to my friends.”
“No business thing has ever been able to get me that depressed. It has to be something very personal, either family or something during that middle-age change of life, when your hormones and everything are different.”
“I did have a very hard time, but God, praying, friends, and just trying to hang on helped me. Being Dolly, just being me, I thought, ‘Hey, either get off your fat ass and do something about it, or go ahead and blow your head off.’ And I thought, ‘Nah, I ain’t gonna do that.’”
“I believe God meant for me to go through that so I could completely feel for other people about everything.”

A police department just denied us public internal affairs records of a lieutenant who used Flock to search his wife’s boyfriend by claiming his statements are entirely exempt under ‘HIPPA.’ (It’s HIPAA & does not apply here). That Lt. kept his job & later got promoted to Capt.
