The incredible legacy of Charles Von Loewenfeldt (1916–1994), an unsung pioneer of post-WWII U.S.-Japan relations.
Operating Charles von Loewenfeldt, Inc. from San Francisco, he spent 50 years building cultural and commercial bridges between nations.
Key milestones of his historic career:
✈️ Aviation History: As the chief U.S. publicist for Japan Air Lines (JAL), he was one of only 18 passengers on JAL’s historic, inaugural international flight from Tokyo to San Francisco on Feb 2, 1954, helping anchor the carrier's brand in North America.
🌐 Civic Ties: He was the primary architect behind establishing the San Francisco–Osaka Sister City affiliation—the very first sister city relationship for SF.
🇯🇵 Expo '70: He heavily promoted the 1970 World Expo across the U.S. and Canada, earning a formal appointment as San Francisco's official Commissioner and Director to the Exposition in Osaka.
📈 Global Commerce: He co-founded the California Council for International Trade (CCIT) to fight trade protectionism and served as long-term counsel to the Japanese Consulate in SF and JETRO.
🎖️ Imperial Honor: In 1987, the Emperor of Japan awarded him the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Fourth Class (Gold Rays with Rosette) for a lifetime of transformative diplomacy and goodwill.
A true visionary whose half-century of work shaped modern transpacific relations.

I think it’s awesome that people raised $200k for Walt, the Red Baron worker who was harassed by a dumb prankster.
But what nobody’s talking about is how his company was sold to a Korean conglomerate — which then cut pay, gutted benefits, and forced unpaid mandatory overtime.
Fascinating. There's so much I don't know about Japan, even though it's my father country.
In 1977, a small town in Hokkaido started selling dreams for 8,000 yen each.
The town was Shari, on the Shiretoko Peninsula. Abandoned farmland inside the national park was facing a wave of development, and the national government did not step in to buy it.
So the mayor tried something new. He asked people all over Japan to chip in for 100 square meters at a time, with every yen going to buying the land and planting trees. The slogan was "Won't you buy a dream in Shiretoko?"
It took 20 years. By 1997, about 49,000 people had given 520 million yen. That same year, the town passed a rule saying the land could never be sold or given away.
By 2010, every plot on the list had been bought.
Today Shiretoko is a World Natural Heritage site, home to one of the densest brown bear populations in Japan. The forest is still being replanted, slowly, tree by tree.
None of those donors will ever own a single square meter. That was the point.

One girl was put on a plane, handed off to three strange men, and forced to work 20 hours a day.

The kids were given a hotline to call if they were in danger. The problem was getting anyone to answer.
HILTON: “There were 65,000 unanswered calls to the hotline.”
And the people who flagged it? “FIRED.”
ROGAN: “It doesn’t even seem like it could be real.”
When Bobby Kennedy Jr. previously described what happened to these kids, he called it a “huge, huge tragedy.”
KENNEDY: “One guy pretended to be the parent of 42 children. We have no idea what happened to those kids.”
“There was about 60 kids who were sent to one address. When we looked at that address, it was a container, a steel container in the middle of a parking lot.”
“A lot of them were sent to work at slaughterhouses and picking fruits in the fields. They were slaves.”
“It’s a huge, huge tragedy. My agency [under Biden] was the single biggest child trafficker in the world.”
And now Xavier Becerra, the man who presided over all of it, wants to be governor of California.
Steve Hilton is running against him.

I cried when I saw this. I feel this man's pain and frustration. Things are nearly unbearable for those of us who are working-class. That $10 or $20 dollars that they stole from him is a lot of money to people like us. You wealthy people out there might think, "Big deal! It's just $10 or $20 bucks." Let me tell you. As a mom of 2 boys who eat like garbage disposals, we're literally buying food a couple of times a week, spending around $1200 per month (at least). And before anyone starts going on about junkfood. We are a health conscious family who buys all of our meat from a local farm that raises and processes it themselves, as well as organic produce. We make all of our own meals. Not out of a box or package. We don't consume shit like Doritos, snickers, energy drinks, soda, etc.
Things are getting rough out there for people like this poor gentleman. I think I speak for the majority of Americans when I say that we're all sick of this bullshit!

Help find Violet Hay, age 10.
Violet was taken from her bed in Canby, Oregon.
Around 1:39am, Pacific, an unknown man walked into an apartment in Canby.
He allegedly assaulted a 12 year old and took 10 year old Violet.
Violet is about 5' tall and 125lbs.
She's a student at Carus Elementary.
There's no description of the suspect or vehicle yet.
The FBI, Oregon State Police and Clackamas County Major Crimes are searching.
