#OnThisDay in 1908, the 'Great Southern Journey', part of Shackleton's British Antarctic 'Nimrod' Expedition 1907-09, set out to attempt the Geographic South Pole. After accompanying Robert Falcon Scott during the 'Discovery' expedition's South Pole attempt, Ernest Shackleton returned south at 33-years-old to lead his own expedition, determined once more to be the first to reach the South Pole. Shackleton, joined by Frank Wild, Eric Marshall and Jameson Adams, departed from their base at Cape Royds, Ross Island. After man-hauling for two-and-a-half months, and only 97 nautical miles from the Pole, Shackleton famously made the decision to turn for home. The men reached a new furthest south record at 88°23’S, by 9 January 1909. Along the way the party discovered and named the Beardmore Glacier and become the first people to see and travel on the South Polar Plateau. 📸Wild, Shackleton, Marshall and Adams (from left) aboard the 'Nimrod' after returning from the Great Southern Journey.
