Excited to see my PhD work published! We performed a GWAS of 19 circulating fatty acids in >239K EUR participants, identifying:
🧬 215 (70 novel) loci for PUFA traits
🧬 163 (61 novel) for MUFA traits
🧬 119 (54 novel) for SFA traits

It is a major PhD project of @YitangS. I am very excited to see this work out. I learned so much about the genetics of circulating fatty acids. This is a solid foundation for more research to come regarding gene-diet interactions for omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
We leveraged GWAS findings to explore genetic correlations, colocalized regions, and fine-map putative causal variants. Gene- and pathway-level analyses revealed enrichment in lipid metabolism and FA biosynthesis, strongest in the liver, followed by blood, kidney, and intestine.

Fish oil supplements are a multi-billion dollar industry with about 2 out of every 25 people taking them. A new study from UGA may encourage a new group to start looking into the supplements too: people with a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol.

It has been such a pleasure working with @YitangS. Yitang so far has 16 pubs (7 first or co-first author) from grad work, with a few more in the pipeline. He also mentored multiple undergrads who are now in grad/med schools. I very much look forward to his future achievements!
