By the autumn of 1942, aircrews were reporting that the existing maps were simply too small to be of real practical use in the field. In response, MI9 authorised an entirely new series of escape and evasion maps. The printing plates were produced by Kodak, and for the remainder of the war these maps continued to be refined and issued. They were usually numbered, with those carrying the prefix “43” believed to have been printed in 1943. Printed at a main scale of 1:1,000,000, they included larger detailed inserts at 1:250,000 to 1:500,000 and covered vast areas of Europe, from Spain to Holland and Portugal to Turkey. In 1943 and 1944, MI9 produced these maps in enormous quantities so that they could be issued as standard equipment to operational aircrew and ground forces – especially in the weeks leading up to D-Day. For men trapped behind enemy lines in the fierce fighting that followed the Normandy landings, such maps were often the difference between capture and survival. Disorientated, exhausted, and cut off from their units after days of intense combat, a good escape map could mean the difference between finding their way back to Allied lines or being hidden and sheltered by brave local families until they could reach safety. Amazon Zoox robotaxi, a Google Waymo car, and a Tesla Cybercab became trapped in a viral face-to-face standoff on a narrow city street in 🇺🇸Austin, Texas, showcasing a classic real-world artificial intelligence deadlock. The vehicles met head-on on a narrow side street constricted by cars parked on both sides. Because each company programs its vehicles with proprietary decision-making algorithms, the vehicles struggled to establish right-of-way protocol without a human driver to initiate a courtesy gesture or negotiate positioning. Eyewitnesses noted that the Waymo continued to creep aggressively forward instead of yielding. Meanwhile, the Tesla Cybercab - which runs entirely unsupervised on vision-based software without a steering wheel or pedals - was seen reversing to clear space for the others. Observers also pointed out that Zoox’s unique bidirectional carriage design makes native reversing straightforward, though both it and the Waymo remained locked in position for several minutes before traffic could clear. This event highlights a prominent operational barrier for autonomous fleets: multi-platform coordination. While current robotaxis excel at perception and safety when interacting with fixed obstacles or rule-following humans, they struggle when they encounter another AI entity governed by a completely different set of non-standardized routing protocols. Similar standoffs between Zoox and Waymo vehicles have previously been documented in San Francisco, indicating that “algorithm clashes” are becoming a frequent consequence of multi-fleet urban deployments. Can the robotaxi companies program “courtesy gestures” as part of their algorithms?

Did you know that the first women to land on the Normandy beachhead in June 1944 were nurses of Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Nursing Service? Their task was to establish a field hospital for 600 wounded soldiers. They succeeded. Please remember these heroines who saved lives:

NATO’s U.S.-led nuclear sharing relies on B-61 gravity nuclear bombs, designed in the 1960s to stop Soviet tank divisions sprinting from East Germany. They have become increasingly obsolete in a modern war—and pose a limited threat to the Russian homeland given advances in Russian air defenses. France’s ASMP-A nuclear-tipped cruise missiles on Rafales, by contrast, are designed to strike Russia’s main cities and have a high chance of reaching their targets, creating an entirely different level of deterrence. The very nature of French nuclear doctrine and its nuclear arsenal makes it in some ways more threatening to Russia, said Nicole Grajewski, an expert on Russia and nuclear affairs at Sciences Po university in Paris. “The B-61 bombs are not instruments for war fighting, they’re pretty much instruments of political assurance,” she said. “The French nuclear arsenal, by contrast, can reach Russia.” @NicoleGrajewski wsj.com/world/europe/frances…
France’s “forward nuclear deterrence” gains shape as ten European nations join the club, aiming to deter Russia. My deep dive into what it means and how it will work at a time when Europe is increasingly uncertain that the American nuclear umbrella still exists. wsj.com/world/europe/frances…

NEW: Taiwanese national security and policy officials are reporting increased People’s Republic of China (PRC) influence operations using AI-generated content and cyberattacks to increase polarization, reduce public trust in the Taiwanese government, and reduce voter turnout. These influence operations will likely continue to increase in the lead-up to Taiwan’s November 28 local elections. (1/2) Other Key Takeaway: The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) conducted live-fire combat training drills using four Type 071 Landing Platform Deck ships designed to support amphibious landing operations on October 14. PRC state media highlighted the use of these vessels in operations in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. This unusual exercise formation and training activity was likely intended to intimidate the Philippines into reducing or stopping its maritime activities near disputed South China Sea features.

A study of articles suspected of being associated with “paper mills”in the field of molecular cancer shows the papers cite other paper mill papers to inflate their metrics. These practices can amplify unreliable findings and slow scientific progress. ow.ly/1izn51008lE

This is TRAGIC news 🥺 Very sad to start seeing more and more of our OG satellites in both the terrestrial and space weather world enter end-of-mission phases, regardless of there being new missions that have taken over their duties 💔 nesdis.noaa.gov/news/noaa-de…
