A new analysis of Dunkleosteus terrelli reveals massive jaws were far more cartilage-rich than once thought, reshaping ideas about its muscle layout, bite mechanics & feeding style. Time to rethink this Devonian apex predator Engelman et al: anatomypubs.onlinelibrary.wi… #FossilFriday

TIL why Diptera and Dipterus have such similar names - sometimes a "wing" doesn't have to technically be a wing... #etymology

These are our Devonian fish type under water gliders for kids. Drepanaspis design can be converted to Pycnosteus, as teaching materials for our science communication events. When actually placed in the water, they can swim as underwater gliders. Children paint their own colors.

This is Coccocephalus, a 319 million year old fossil found in a Lancashire coal mine in the 1800s. Inside its skull is a fossilised brain - the actual brain! - preserved in 3D. New paper led by @Rodrigoichthys revises the story of brain evolution in fish🤯 rdcu.be/c4Eyj

Been working on the UGS paleowebsite, The l-m Devonian Water Canyon Formation in northern Utah has a wonderfully diverse fish assemblage much like that of the Old Red Sandstone. Denison & more recently, Elliott did a lot of work there. But no art of the fish assemblage: sad..

New preprint...new Tiktaalik reconstruction! The full scan of the type specimen and reconstruction by @TomDoesScience. Something very unexpected...specialized sacral ribs that may have supported the hind fin.

This video shows serial sections through an elephant's trunk, acquired with a bandsaw and a camera 🐘🪚📸 We used this technique to understand the distinct biomechanics of this muscular hydrostat, in our article published last year in @CurrentBiology sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
Can I interest you in a blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) scan on this fine Wednesday? I'll always be a shark nose stan, but I must admit that the AoL are stealin' the show a little here (1/2)

This is a #sturgeon notochord - the rubber-like tube/rod found in their spinal cord (= inside vertebrae). It’s flexible and serves (passively!) to hold the body and move around. Ancestral vertebrates had it, some fish still do too, while reduced in evolution of others (incl. us)
