IMBWA ROW: Mahere Shared a Clip and Three Laughing Emojis, Now Zanu PF Wants an Apology HARARE - A Zanu PF activist has demanded that the lawyer and opposition politician Fadzayi Mahere publicly apologise to the ICT Minister, Tatenda Mavetera, over a 28-second video that has set the party’s online foot soldiers against one another. Nobody on either side has yet produced proof of when or where it was filmed. The clip shows Mavetera speaking at a lectern. An online publication hostile to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inner circle claims she used the moment to rebuke Zanu PF delegates who stood to cheer Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, invoking the Shona proverb “Imbwa inoroverwa painenge yabira”, which it translates as “a dog is beaten where it has stolen”. Mavetera’s defenders say the footage comes from a different event altogether. - zimdaily.com/article/news-20…

GUNS DOWN, COMRADES: Mnangagwa Calls In Zimbabwe's Illegal Firearms Three Days After Chiwenga Asked What the Coup Was For HARARE - The police want the guns back. On Monday Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced that President Emmerson Mnangagwa had granted a national firearms amnesty, allowing anyone holding an unlicensed, smuggled or illegally acquired weapon to hand it in at the nearest police station “without being questioned.” The window runs from 12 October to 12 November. By the time most Zimbabweans heard about it, a week of it had already gone. The timing did the rest. Three days earlier, at the ZANU PF conference in Chinhoyi, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, the general who sent the tanks into Harare in November 2017, had stood up before the President and asked whether the party was repeating the very mistakes it once removed Robert Mugabe for. Mnangagwa has never needed reminding how quickly an army can change its mind. In August 2023, a week before his own second inauguration, soldiers in Gabon put Ali Bongo under house arrest, and Bongo was reduced to pleading on video for his supporters to make noise. By Monday lunchtime the country’s group chats had joined the dots, whether or not there were any dots to join. zimdaily.com/article/news-20…
