An INVESTED coach’s job isn’t M-F. It isn’t an 8-hour shift. It isn’t from October-March. It NEVER ends. Be sure to love on the coaches that are invested. They matter! 🏀❤️

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson did not disappoint in his speech at the inaugural H-Town Basketball Tipoff. Sampson tells a great Patrick Beverley story from his days with the Rockets with Beverley in the crowd. Follows that up with a Kingston Flemings truth. And he gives the type of lesson only Kelvin Sampson can give. "Let me explain the difference in knowledge and wisdom," Sampson says. "Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Now wisdom is knowing enough not to put it in a fruit salad.
"You guys understand that? As you get older you're going to understand what that means. What that means is don't always think you know all the answers."
Rudy Tomjanovich is the surprise guest at this inaugural H-Town Basketball Tipoff and the Rockets are interested in being more involved in future H-Town Tipoffs, sources tell @PaperCityMag. Event orchestrator Mike Pede says he expects future Tipoffs will be moved earlier in the calendar before the Rockets' season opener as well to allow the team to participate, creating an even bigger basketball extravaganza.
Almost 600 people are at this first Tipoff. Pede says he was hoping for 300 when he first started planning it. Championship Houston Comets coach Van Chancellor, Otis Birdsong and Rickie Winslow are also all here.

Just because the coach doesn’t play your child doesn’t mean they dislike them. A coach can care deeply about your child, both as a player and person, without agreeing with your assessment of their talent.

Dawn Staley shares the question every recruit should ask and almost none of them do.
"Everybody's good on the good days. It is who you can trust, who you can talk to and communicate with on your worst day."
Then she explained what she tells every recruit:
"We're gonna make you feel good during the recruiting process. You're gonna come here, we're gonna roll out the red carpet, we're gonna give you our best. Everybody's gonna do that."
Every program shows you their best - that's the easy part. But it comes down to trust.
"I want you to think about if it's 2 or 3 years down the line, when you in a slump, or when you lost a parent, or you broke up with a boyfriend, or whatever - Who's gonna get you back on course to be your talented self?"
That's the real question. Not who recruits you the hardest, but who do you trust? And who do you believe will commit to you and your future?
Everyone looks good when things are easy.
The real test is who shows up when things get hard.

Kelvin Sampson says the team has no distractions:
“I think the last eight years, we’ve won about 240-something games. It’s because we have no distractions. We’re consistent. The one thing about this program is our consistency.”
“I don’t recruit problems. I learned a long time ago — if you don’t want problems then don’t recruit them. It’s not an accident that we have great kids.”
“If I don’t want to coach them, then that means I don’t mind coaching against them. And a lot of the guys we take, I don’t mind coaching against them. Check our record.”

“Any great player wants to be coached hard.
Coaches take players to levels they can’t take themselves.
What great player doesn’t want to be coached hard?”
Being coachable means caring more about getting better than being right.
