I wouldn’t have written FIRST BLOOD if I hadn’t read a book about Hemingway by Penn State professor Philip Young. I was so impressed, I resolved to move from Canada to the United States and study w/Young. On this podcast I discuss that formative adventure. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

44 years ago, this month in 1982, the film adaptation of my novel FIRST BLOOD debuted. I fondly recall the thrill of seeing it with an excited audience. It changed action movies, just as I had the goal of changing action novels.

One of my favorite movies for Halloween, THE CHANGELING, stars George C. Scott as a composer who moves into a haunted mansion in Seattle. Peter Medak directed the 1980 Canadian supernatural horror film. Great stuff.

I love CBS’s new legal drama CUPERTINO about a law firm’s fight against the abuses of high tech. Lively, witty, timely & each episode is blessedly self-contained rather than carrying the bloat of most ltd series. The title refers to a Silicon Valley community. Also on Paramount+.

My favorite ghost novel for Halloween is Henry James’s THE TURN OF THE SCREW (1898). He wrote it so that the reader can’t be certain if the ghosts are real or imagined, calling it “a trap for the unwary.” My essay about James’s ghost stories is in my collection STARS IN MY EYES.
