NEW: David Neuberger tells the Guardian that the status quo is failing “the fundamental aims of the law – to respect people’s right of personal autonomy, and to protect the vulnerable”. It's time for change.

I'm reading compelling The Day I Die by @AnitaHannig. Tenderly & straightforwardly written it captures lived experience of dying & #MAID in the US. Little details like what do you do when with a group of family at a loved one's end (do you bring sandwiches?) really bring it home – at White Colne, East

Scottish consultation shows 76% of respondents want legislation for assisted dying. How long must we wait before England consults voters? bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-628… – at California, USA

Is @TheBMA going to take the Roe v Wade road over assisted dying asks recent BMA President Prof Neena Modi? #ARM2022
Over 60% of members do not want the BMA to oppose assisted dying, hence a neutral position was adopted in 2021. To reverse this would be to force a minority view on the majority; is the UK to go down the Roe v Wade route? @BMA @BMA_JuniorDocs @BMA_Academics @BMAScotland @BMA_GP

When death is inevitable, suffering should not be. Dying people deserve the choice to control the manner of their death. Parliament will debate our #AssistedDying petition on 4 July. There is still time to sign the petition to make your voice heard by MPs. petition.parliament.uk/petit…

Maybe the church leaders should come and see my loving 93 year old mother with cancer for 2 years and has now infected her spine. Paralysed from waist down. She has asked to go to sleep. Why won’t you support this. Do you like people to suffer?

Jan's simple statement of facts about how assisted dying would improve her life stands in sharp contrast to the lies and confusion about the matter that are spread by opponents of law change. Well said, and thank you for using your time and energy to support law change for others
“For me, having this choice would be like an insurance policy against suffering” Read Jan Butterworth and her daughter Sarah’s powerful testimony on why an assisted dying law must be introduced into the UK. 👇 👇 👇

All eyes on Jersey, who has voted in support of the principle of #assisteddying. This will become a Bill and may be the first British territory to permit it. Shouldn’t terminally-ill Brits on the mainland who want it, also have the same right not to suffer on? @dignityindying

Alain's husband Paul welcomed yesterday's landslide result in Jersey. “It is heartening to know that other terminally ill people may be given this choice in future and won’t have to suffer as Alain did, and that his tireless campaigning was not in vain.” #YesToDignity

Really admire this parliamentarian in Jersey. A person of faith who accepts that she should not stand in the way of others who may want an assisted death: Deputy Carina Alves said despite her beliefs she agreed with the proposition.

My friend and colleague Theo Boer - with whom I am working with in the Netherlands - is cited in this article. He and others ask those who wish for #assisteddying in Scotland to examine carefully what has occurred in the Netherlands and Canada.

Lord Elder speaks emotionally in support. "I think the safeguards are all there. We've heard about doctors. We mustn't lose sight of the fact that the dying patient is the most important person in all of this. It's about giving choice at the very end of life." #YesToDignity

Later today in the House of Lords an Anglican bishop will lead peers in prayer before joining other senior Anglican clerics on the 'bishops' bench' to oppose hugely popular #AssistedDying legislation. This undue deference to religious authority isn't healthy for our democracy.

Nearly 1700 doctors, 1% of doctors in the uk, oppose, but the vast majority are either in favour or neutral, like the BMA, RCP, RCollege of Nursing, etc. This is a moral question, and it is paternalistic to impose your morals on dying patients.

"Assisted dying is as close as an issue can possibly come to uniting the country. The majority that supports reform of the law is absolutely overwhelming. And politically very broad, too." 👏
Assisted dying is that very rare thing, a small change that would have a big impact — and it unites rather than divides | ✍️ @Dannythefink thetimes.co.uk/article/assis…

"If they [dying people] were confident that they could rely on doctors in the UK when the time came, they would enjoy the preciousness of life while they still could, and then die at home surrounded by loved ones. Instead, they end their days prematurely. " Well said @matthewsyed
The criminalisation of those who help patients to die with dignity is one of the democratic outrages of our time. It dehumanises those in suffering, prohibiting them from exercising the most basic of human rights. thetimes.co.uk/article/c68b9…
