When David Stearns took over in 2024, the core was: 29-year-old Pete Alonso 30-year-old Francisco Lindor 30-year-old Edwin Díaz 31-year-old Brandon Nimmo 32-year-old Jeff McNeil The Mets had a terrible farm and an organization that couldn’t develop anyone. There wasn’t even a single starting pitcher in that core. In 2026, less than three full seasons later, that core is now: 21-year-old A.J. Ewing 23-year-old Carson Benge 24-year-old Nolan McLean 27-year-old Christian Scott 27-year-old Juan Soto 28-year-old Bo Bichette 32-year-old Francisco Lindor Other than Lindor, the oldest guy in that group is 28. The youngest is 21. When Stearns took over the youngest in that group was 29 years old! Now the organization can actually develop players and has one of the better farm systems in baseball. Stearns reset a core that made the playoffs twice in six years — ONCE UNDER HIM! Alonso, Nimmo, and McNeil were not even why the Mets made the playoffs in 2024. Instead they were a big reason that team was fighting until the very last day of the season to clinch. Lindor along with the players Stearns put around them carried that team into the playoffs while those other guys all had down years. Yet fans will still tell you Stearns has done an awful job. Almost every other team in baseball would take him tomorrow. Claiming he has run the Mets into the ground and that he’s a total disaster is dishonest and irrational. Thinking he hasn’t built this roster to be a future consistent contender just means you’re not watching or you’re out of touch. It’s egregious. Missing the playoffs one year into a core reset is not some unprecedented disaster. Especially when most of the team’s core was either hurt or in the minors during this season other than Bichette, McLean, and Benge. Missing the playoffs happens to a lot of teams when they move on and stop running it back with a stale, aging group and actually start focusing on their future building the next core. The other option was keeping a group that was only getting older and punting the future. That tradeoff makes no sense. This is the most realistic way to build a World Series contender. Especially one that can compete year after year. #LGM

I expect plenty of depth moves to be made to this 40 man roster that I probably missed out on.

Bo Bichette is exercising his $42 million player option for next season and staying with the New York Mets, league sources tell The Athletic. Bichette, 28, holds another player option worth the same amount for 2028. nytimes.com/athletic/7736936…

This remained obvious from the time he signed the deal. Bo Bichette would probably have to secure at least a 7 year deal in open market to make it worth not taking the easy 42 mil next year the year after. My real question is this. Do Mets like his 3B enough to keep him there, or move him to 2B, make room for Rojas/Voit to come?
UPDATE People around the Mets seem “fairly convinced” that Bo Bichette will opt in to his deal for next season and stay with the Mets, per @chelsea_janes

Will Tarik Skubal get over or under 7 years / $325M (~$46.4M AAV)? And should the Mets sign him at that price? #LGM

Clay Holmes, who is expected to opt out of his deal with the Cubs, is open to a return to the Mets, SNY's Chelsea Janes reports: "Holmes could also be a candidate for a return. As of this week, he is expected to opt out of his current deal, and people familiar with his thinking say he is open to a return to the Mets if the right deal is offered. He did, after all, thrive in Queens as a starter - so much so that he will likely receive a far bigger contract as a free agent than he probably would have if the Mets had not given him the chance to jump out of the bullpen."

WILD. Pat Murphy was reportedly the Mets’ choice to manage the team starting in 2020, but the Wilpons ultimately prevented it from happening, per @Joelsherman1 Murphy also had to fly coach for all three of his interviews with the organization.

I’m no scouting expert, but I would imagine it’s not the best of looks to be below league average from a staffing perspective with an owner with the most resources in the sport These are the type of things we were supposed to be improving from an organizational perspective I don’t even think you can really play the “too many cooks in the kitchen” game given how overworked scouts are and how broad of an area there is to cover with baseball being an international sport
For my old friends at @BaseballAmerica, I compiled the sizes of each team’s scouting staff. Note that many teams frequently renowned for their technology and analytics (Dodgers, Rays, Brewers) also have some of the largest scouting staffs in MLB. baseballamerica.com/stories/…

Important to note the Mets still value Megill and it showed last offseason when they still tendered him a contract and paid him $2.5M just to rehab under their organization

Mitch Voit was the MVP of the Mets system this season, after stealing 45 bases, and going on a tear in Double-A in nearly 30 games to end the year. He led the organization in steals, and was one of just two NYM prospects to steal 40+ bases. Voit limits strikeouts well, keeping his K% below 20% on the year. He made consistent contact, and generated plenty of line-drive contact, while hitting the majority of his batted-ball output pull-side.
New York Mets MiLB Team Of The Year is out now on my Substack. Features: - Mitch Voit - Jonathan Santucci - Jefferson Rojas + More free to read below.👇👇 tobeyschulman.substack.com/p…

Regardless of the Bo Bichette decision, I'm curious if Jefferson Rojas can or will be given a shot to pull a Carson Benge out of next spring camp with Mets.

Yo Edwin Diaz I need an update ? Dodgers though !!!
Edwin Díaz was asked how hard it was to leave the Mets and pick the Dodgers "It wasn't easy. I spent 7 years in New York. They treat me really good, they treat me great. I chose the Dodgers because they're a winning organization. I'm looking to win. And I think they have everything to win. Picking the Dodgers was pretty easy"
