Great piece. Let's hope that we all have the courage to be honest with ourselves and demand others do the same so that "bullshitting" ourselves and others goes away and isn't amplified greatly by AI/LLMS.
Seek truth no matter how much it hurts instead of the ecstacy of delusion.

The USDA grade on a steak is a marbling score from one slice of the animal. It isn't a safety inspection.
Prime, Choice and Select are the 3 grades you'll see at retail, and they're set by how much fat is flecked through the meat. After the carcass is split between the 12th and 13th ribs, a grader or a camera looks at the exposed face of the ribeye and scores the marbling. Prime needs slightly abundant marbling, Choice needs small, Select needs slight. That one score goes on the whole animal. No other cut gets looked at, and tenderness and flavor are never measured, only inferred from the fat.
Inspection is required on every carcass but grading isn't. The packer asks for it and pays USDA by the hour, $101 an hour as of this month. About 68% of graded beef is now scored by camera, by USDA's own count.
In 2006, 3% of graded beef was Prime, 56% was Choice and 41% was Select. By the end of 2024 it was 11% Prime, 72% Choice and 14% Select.
Prime is typically 30% to 50% more per pound than Choice, and Choice is 10% to 30% more per pound than Select.

Friendly remind that Trevor Milton was found guilty of securities and wire fraud, sentenced to 4 years in prison and ordered to pay a $1,000,000 fine plus $168,000,000 in restitution.
He then donated $3,200,000 to Trumps Campaign.
Donald Trump then pardoned him.
As a result, Trevor no longer has to pay his civil fines or restitution. He also comes out with a clean record meaning no job restrictions so he can go back to working in security-related positions.
Not so sure the federal reserve should care about coreweave. Why not let the free market determine what the fair value is for the debt?

I wrote an op-ed.
States are boosting high school graduation rates by lowering the standards required to earn a diploma, with serious unintended consequences. Credentials only have value if they signify real knowledge and skills.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

SF spends double any other major city on its fire department, which is just a bunch of emergency response in a giant expensive truck-sized trench coat.
We should reform firefighter hiring and pay, reduce the number of fighter fighters, give them smaller vehicles, close down 8 fire stations (of 48!) which see fewer than 3 calls per day, and most importantly, stop blindly Respecting whatever they say about single-stair reforms, lane widths, outdoor dining, etc.
My friend reacted to hearing my anti-fire-department screed by asserting that SF firefighters are hot -- I would also support assigning 5% of our firefighters to do PR work at Beaux. They're good with poles.

Me and Ilhan Omar are far apart policy wise. I’m pro life, she’s pro abortion. I’m pro 2A, she’s pro gun control. And on and on.
But can someone tell me how pretending to get ready to deport Ilhan Omar is going to bring gas down under $2, make health insurance freaking affordable, make a family’s weekly grocery bill make sense, and stop sending our beloved military off to fight for another fucking foreign war???
People are so sick and tired of the bullshit.
When you dumb mf’ers at the WH actually release the Epstein files and lock up the pedophiles and rapists you all hang out with, then we will start paying attention.

Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine. Enough is enough.
President Trump should rescind the diesel deal with Russia and return to the strong policies of our four years in the White House; use the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia Act to impose harsh sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy and work with our allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. We will soon see what will be, in effect, a perfectly legal distributed denial of service attack on customer service departments authorized by millions of consumers when it becomes widely known that Muse/Dot/etc can make unlimited requests for old refunds, negotiate deals, etc.

Mike was my colleague at Berkeley, and he's been fairly skeptical of deep learning's trajectory for years. Most scientists are skeptics, and it can take a big shock to get someone to consider a possibility that goes against the anchoring effect coded in our DNA.
I too was somewhat of a skeptic until ~6 months ago, and people ask me all the time why I joined Anthropic.
It started in April, when a friend I've known for 20 yrs messaged me saying he'd be in the Bay Area in a week, and he suggested we meet up. I invited him to my house for dinner, and he told me he had just joined Anthropic. He said the models were becoming increasingly more capable, and he believed both that they'd soon be smarter than him and also that all intellectual work would be highly devalued in the near future, and lastly that society was not at all ready for what's coming.
I'd of course heard claims similar to this before, but not from a friend I'd known for this long, and who I trusted, at my dining room table. It was the initial shock needed to destabilize my own anchoring. Also, I've been fortunate to work with and/or mentor many smart people in my life (e.g. Fields medalists, a 4x Putnam Fellow, IOI first place winners, etc.), so I feel pretty calibrated in recognizing very smart people, and this was someone who is definitely very smart and with impressive such credentials. So, it was hard to ignore this friend saying the models would be smarter than even him in particular.
After that dinner, I decided to do an informal survey, calling and meeting up with a lot of my friends who now work on improving model capabilities at these frontier labs. They all agreed with that first friend. These were all people I'd known 10, 15, 20 years, who mentored me, or I mentored them, or we met professionally in academia. These are people I trust, and their beliefs on this topic were consistent.
I then spent a whole lot of time understanding the missions of different companies, and talking to current and former employees and people in leadership. I read Dario's (long) essays and watched videos on YouTube of company leaders being interviewed. Anthropic's stated mission "to ensure that the world safely makes the transition through transformative AI" felt like exactly the right guiding principle to handle such a society-disrupting technology, and everyone I spoke to at the company was very aligned with this mission. It's easily the most mission-focused place I've ever been at, and everyone takes the work extremely seriously and with a profound sense of responsibility.
And now here I am. And being on the inside, the pace of progress has surprised me more than I first imagined. The moment that pure mathematicians are in, to me, is just a microcosm of what I predict a much larger of society will be grappling with in the not too distant future, and I really hope our leaders and the general public internalize sooner than later just how significant a moment we're in.
