Thomas Gataker on repentance and faith: “Repentance: A man is in a justifiable estate, but he may [be] justified after: yea by renewed acts as occas. shall require. Such a one commits sin: He does not fall from 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑠: but there is no justifying or pardoning that man & freeing him from the paternall wrath of God without repentance. Ps. 51” -John Lightfoot’s 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝐴𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑙𝑦, pg. 91

You can weep over your sin and still love it. You can fear its consequences while secretly longing to commit it again. You can confess it with your lips while keeping it enthroned in your heart. In his 1668 book The Doctrine of Repentance, the Puritan Thomas Watson identifies SIX essential ingredients of true repentance: 1. SIGHT OF SIN: You must see your own wickedness, not merely the sins of others. You must recognize what you are before a holy God. 2. SORROW FOR SIN: You must grieve not merely because your sin has brought you suffering, but because you have offended the God who made you. 3. CONFESSION OF SIN: You must stop excusing, minimizing, and concealing your transgressions. You must accuse yourself and acknowledge your guilt before God. 4. SHAME FOR SIN: You must learn to blush at what you once boasted of. What once delighted your corrupt heart must now humble you. 5. HATRED OF SIN: You must hate what you once loved. Not merely because sin threatens your happiness, reputation, or eternal safety, but because it is hateful to God. 6. TURNING FROM SIN: You must forsake your wicked ways and turn to God with your whole heart. You cannot claim to have abandoned sin while secretly reserving a place for its return. You have not truly repented merely because you regret what sin has cost you. The question is whether you now hate the sin you once cherished, and whether your heart and life are being turned toward God. Repentance is not merely sorrow over sin. It is a Spirit-wrought change of heart that produces a change of life.

This discussion on the Covenant of Works between Scott Swain and Derek Rishmawy is incredible. Here, Dr Swain explains how to understand positive law vs natural law under the commands of the Covenant of Works. It is masterful.

On the latest Everyday Pastor episode, @LigonDuncan asked @JoelBeeke what we can learn from the Puritan Thomas Goodwin. Don’t miss Dr. Beeke’s answer. One of the most special moments we’ve ever had on the show.

"Thus you see that Gods love of good will is equal in all his Saints, and therefore you are to understand this Argument of Gods love of complacency; now this love runs out more to some Saints then it do's to others; for they that have much holiness, are much beloved, but they that have most holiness, are most beloved; the greater thou art in holiness, the greater wilt thou be beloved of God.” -Thomas Brooks, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦, pg. 489

“Without Christ, you cannot love God, nor have any lively apprehensions of his love. Without Christ, you can have no hope of heaven, and therefore no endeavours for it. Without him, you cannot come near to God in prayer, as having no confidence, because no admittance, acceptance, or hope. Without him, how terrible are the thoughts of death! which in him we may see as a conquered thing: and when we remember that he was dead, and is now alive, and the Lord of life, and hath the keys of death and hell, with what boldness may we lay down this flesh, and suffer death to undress our souls! It is only in Christ that we can comfortably think of the world to come; when we remember that he must be our Judge, and that in our nature, glorified, he is now in the highest, Lord of all; and that he is ‘preparing a place for us, and will come again to take us to himself, that where he is, there we may be also,’ John xiv. 3. Alas! without Christ, we know not how to live an hour; nor can have hope or peace in any thing we have or do; nor look with comfort either upward or downward, to God, or the creature; nor think without terrors of our sins, of God, or of the life to come. Resolve, therefore, that as true converts, you are wholly to live upon Jesus Christ, and to do all that you do by his Spirit and strength; and to expect all your acceptance with God upon his account.” -Richard Baxter, 𝐴 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝐷𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦, part 1, Christian Ethics, ch. 1, Direct. XX

Gentle/Meek means reserve, an unwillingness to force yourself forward, which is almost the opposite of contemporary "gentleness" which is self-serving, performative, soft niceness & scolding all who refuse to play this game.

“Pardon of sin is an act of God's free grace whereby to a repenting, believing sinner for the sake of Christ and his righteousness that obligation to punishment which ariseth from the sinfulness of his heart and life is dissolved and ceaseth; or this: 'tis a gracious act of God discharging the sinner by the gospel promise or grant from the obligation to punishment upon consideration of the satisfaction made by Christ accepted by the sinner and pleaded with God.” -Matthew Henry, 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑡, 20 Dec. 1691

"[T]he faith that justifies us is no less than our taking Christ for our Saviour, and becoming true Christians, according to the tenour of the baptismal covenant; from faith engrafting us into Christ, to faith deriving virtue from him as our root." -John Evans, Matthew Henry's Commentary - Romans, commentary on ch. 1 vs. 16-18

“Christ offereth to help you out: he reacheth out his hand to you, and, if you perish, it is for refusing his help. "Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man open to me, I will come in." What though you are poor, and wretched, and blind, and naked! Christ offereth a cure for your blindness, a covering for your nakedness, a remedy for thy poverty; he tenders you his righteousness, his grace. "I counsel thee to buy of me gold, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed; anoint thy eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see. Do you say, the condition is impossible; for I have not wherewith to buy? You must know that this buying is " without money and without price." This buying is by begging and seeking with diligence and constancy in the use of God's means. God commandeth thee to know him, and to fear him. Dost thou say, Yea, but my mind is blinded, and my heart is hardened, from his fear? I answer, God doth offer to enlighten thy mind, and to teach thee this fear, that is presented to thy choice. "For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord." So, that now, if men live in ignorance and estrangement from the Lord, it is because they " will not understand and desire the knowledge of his ways." " If thou eriest after knowledge, if thou seekest her as silver, &c. then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God." Is not here a fair offer? "Turn ye at my reproof; behold I will pour out my Spirit unto you." Though of yourselves you can do nothing, yet you may do all through his Spirit enabling you, and he doth offer assistance to you. God bids you " wash and make you clean." You say you are unable, as much as the leopard to wash out his spots. Yea, but the Lord doth offer to purge you; so that, if you be filthy still, it is through your own wilfulness.” ~ Joseph Alleine, Alarm to the Unconverted, ch. VII

Very excited to send my C&C ESV off to @RockWallBibles for a rebind. I plan to use it primarily for teaching, as it has a big beautiful font size. I still felt a pull to get a new personal reading Bible for devotions that I could mark up anew. Super excited to dig into this one.
Getting close to the end of the lifecycle for my ESV with Creeds and Confessions Bible. This one lasted me 6 years but I’m in the market for a new one soon. Any suggestions or ideas for a replacement? Preferably ESV for teaching purposes.

To the haters, yes I still use the KJV! Fewer editions of the Psalter can match its beauty. I love my Westminster reference KJV.
