I share my birthday with Beyoncé, which makes sense, because someone had to balance out her too much talent with no talent at all. Happy to do my bit for the world. ☺️

Amazon is building one of India's largest data centres metres from people's homes near Mumbai. Residents want it gone. Tushar Shetty bought a 21st-floor flat for the green views. Today he looks out at bare red earth, cleared for the Amazon site. "I would not have bought the house if I had known," he told us. India is betting big on becoming the physical backbone of the AI age. Amazon, Google and Microsoft are pouring billions in, chasing Modi's ambition to host the world's data. But the facilities are landing next to where people live. Our reporting found protests outside the Mumbai site, opposition politicians joining the fight Even some in the industry are uneasy. "I will never set up a data centre in a residential area," one Indian data centre CEO, Sharad Agarwal, told an industry event. His company runs 14 of them. With @VibhutiSharmas, @MunsifV. Why is the BJP responding to allegations against a constitutional body?

It took a few absurd claims to get people to pay attention to something that has been public knowledge since February.
India’s economy is now smaller than previously estimated. Why? The 2011-12 GDP series was perhaps overestimating economic activity; the new 2022-23 series with improved methodology seems to have offered a course correction—after a decade of questions and criticism.

How do you survey people who don't even open their gates for you? You let them collect their data themselves - at least that's what MoSPI is planning for the 2027-28 Household Consumption Expenditure Survey. Link to story in comments.

javed akhtar sahab with an 80% hit rate in dard-e-disco ... visionary
If you’re in your 20s (and ambitious) do everything to move to those 4 cities Yes people will mog you for paying extortionate rents for such little comfort but who cares, you’re not everyone, you’re on a mission, you’re here for greatness London/NYC/Paris/SF are basically the golden 4. They’re not just big cities, they’re global sorting machines. People move there from all over the world because they want sth badly enough to accept all the downsides. The guy born in London can be lazy. But the 26yo Frenchman, Indian, American, Italian, Nigerian, Lebanese etc who voluntarily accepts the tiny flat, shit commute and absurd rent to be there has already self-selected pretty hard And that selection compounds. I felt it instantly moving from my hometown in France to London. Growing up I was always “the ambitious one” in my friend group. Then you arrive in London and suddenly you feel extremely average. Everyone is trying to do sth. Completely changes your reference point for what a normal person can achieve The other thing is just how many serious games are happening at once. If you know at 22 that you’re going to be a semiconductor engineer forever, maybe there are better specialised places. But most ambitious 24yos have absolutely no clue what game they’ll eventually want to play. In London/NYC/Paris you can accidentally become friends with people in PE, startups, politics, law, media, fashion, pharma, academia etc. Your finance friend dates someone in fashion, their roommate is building a startup, you meet someone in politics at dinner. Suddenly 5 completely different lives feel plausible That’s insanely valuable when you’re young precisely because you don’t yet know which people / industries / opportunities will matter to your 34yo self SF is the weird exception because it’s basically one giant concentrated bet on tech/AI. Much narrower than the other 3, but that game is so asymmetric rn that it deserves its spot. If you want to build at the frontier there’s probably no other place where your reference class changes that aggressively And yh everyone keeps saying the internet made geography irrelevant. Maybe for information. Definitely not for trust/friendship. Anyone can learn from the same people online now, send the same cold DM, follow the same accounts. Much harder to replicate being the guy someone has had 20 dinners with, worked with, travelled with, introduced to friends and randomly bumped into for 5 years When you’re 24 and nobody knows who tf you are, geography can do a lot of the work for you. You get invited because your colleague knows someone. You end up at a dinner because your friend needs a +1. Someone you met 3 years ago leaves and starts a company. Another moves to NYC. Another becomes a partner somewhere. Most of the ROI is completely impossible to predict upfront Basically before you have your own gravity, borrow the city’s At 45, if you’ve built the company / reputation / money / audience / network, you can go live in Tuscany, Mallorca, South of France or wherever and people will come to you. At 24 no one is coming lol. You should probably be where everything is happening And tbh if you have the ability to move I wouldn’t spend 3 years waiting for the perfect job / apartment / timing. Get the shitty room, accept being poorer for a while, figure it out once you’re there. Your 20s are probably the cheapest years of your life to tolerate inconvenience anyway You can optimise sqm, weather and comfort later At 24 I’d rather maximise how many possible lives are available to me

Interesting piece by the express this morning. According to the report, in order to comply with the govt-mandated 3-hr takedown timeline, Meta has integrated its Application Programming Interface with the Sahyog portal, allowing content flagged through govt directions uploaded on the system to be automatically taken down from its platforms, without a separate human review by the company. This automation eliminates the room for Meta to review or contest any of these content take-down directives before it complies with them. indianexpress.com/article/bu…

Not just rape apologia, but also AI slop. It shows the calibre of these people. (Fwiw, Tejpal admitted to the crime in writing, in purple prose even worse than this slop, and that's all that matters.)
Sanjay Hegde writes; “Two minutes in a lift. Two storeys of a hotel. Two stories, hers and his, each told with conviction, each carryinga life within it. One court found the first story unproved. Another found it proved beyond reasonable doubt, on the same record. That divergence is not an embarrassment to the system. It is the reason the system builds in a final, full appeal. Let that appeal be heard. Let the analysis be dispassionate. And until then, let the rest of us have the humility to say the three hardest words in public life: we don't know.” @TheTribunechd @sanjayuvacha

So rape isn’t rape if the accused was critical of Modi and Shah? The defence of Tarun Tejpal by some is nauseating. Your politics does not determine whether a woman deserves to be believed, heard or treated with dignity. Sexual violence does not acquire ideological exemptions.

Ruling party says don't trust messages on What's App.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
GOI has yet to provide any concrete study conducted on effects of E20 blending. Instead they've quietly pressured any negative reports to be removed. Cars24's test shows a drop of 35% in fuel efficiency for 2015 Dzire. reddit.com/r/carIndia/com… indiatoday.in/india/story/e2… niti.gov.in/sites/default/…
