Minimum dataset for surgical patients in Africa. Have a look at the dataset. Let's see if we can get this established across Africa. It would allow risk adjusted tracking of surgical outcomes doi: 10.1007/s00268-022-06815-3 rdcu.be/cZMAB @HylaKluyts #APORG @AfricanSOS

I am very proud to have been a part of this challenging project. I read the paper again, think about where it started, amazed at what it became, there is a best way to eat an elephant: in a team doi.org/10.1016/j.bja.2021.0… @_tim_stephens @VickeryNiki @Graham_P_Martin @rupert_pearse
A ‘generic fix’ for surgical mortality in Africa didn't work in ASOS-2. Future projects need interventions co-designed with local teams using proven implementation strategies @BJAJournals @BruceBiccard @rupert_pearse @VickeryNiki @_tim_stephens bit.ly/3sFLKi

Fantastic piece of work. Shows the value of studying complex interventions and why things work and do not. Similar issues with burden of measurement occurred in the EPOCH study @_tim_stephens

Stay home. That’s the easy bit.
This is a critical care patient. You cannot learn to look after patients as sick as this in a couple of days! ICU nursing is a speciality that demands significant knowledge and skill! Look after ICU nurses who are really struggling right now STAY AT HOME @BACCNUK

Many established risk factors for surgery are more prevalent in people with socioeconomic deprivation, but these do not sufficiently explain the increased risk of poorer outcomes. (1/2)
Social factors are major determinants of health and perioperative outcomes but are frequently overlooked. Socioeconomic deprivation increased age-adjusted risk of dying within 3 years after elective surgery. @BJAJournals @YizeWan @rupert_pearse bit.ly/35MyqPW

I like that the words, "ICU bed" , "Ventilators" , "anaesthesiologists" , "Intensivists" , "ICU nurses" , are trending on people's lips. In Uganda. #StayhomeUG

I am a surgeon with 2 days of sudden and profound #anosmia. OH say I’m fit for work. No need for #COVID testing. After discussion with ID colleagues it seems this is much more prevalent than previously thought - Surely its worth investigating this properly?
There is the potential to reduce COVID-19 transmission by requesting that individuals with new onset of anosmia self-isolate. A lost sense of smell as marker of COVID-19 infection... for full details see below

Very important discussion at #Afrosurg on #Quality of #Care. With limited resources to provide surgical care, it encouraging to see so much emphasis placed on quality of care. High-quality Health Systems in the Sustainable Development Goals Era: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3019…
